My friend said “Only speaking to AI for long periods usually isn’t healthy for most people. AI can be useful for: * practicing conversation * brainstorming * emotional support in the moment * learning * reducing loneliness temporarily But humans need things AI can’t fully provide: * mutual care and responsibility * physical presence and touch * real social feedback * shared experiences * belonging within a community * relationships that can grow unpredictably If someone replaces nearly all human interaction with AI, common risks can include: * increased isolation * social anxiety getting stronger over time * emotional dependence on the AI * losing confidence in real-world conversations * distorted expectations of relationships (because AI is designed to be unusually patient, attentive, and available) That said, context matters a lot. Sometimes people go through periods where AI becomes a major social outlet because: * they’re isolated geographically * they’re burned out * they’re neurodivergent * they’re grieving * they’re recovering from difficult relationships * they feel safer talking to AI than to people In those situations, talking to AI is not necessarily harmful by itself. It can even be stabilizing or helpful. The bigger question is whether it’s becoming a bridge back toward life, or a replacement for it. A practical balance is: * use AI as a tool or supplement * keep at least some human contact in your life, even small amounts * notice whether AI use leaves you more connected to life, or more withdrawn from it Signs it may be becoming unhealthy: * avoiding all human interaction because only AI feels comfortable * feeling distressed when not talking to AI * losing interest in real relationships entirely * neglecting work, sleep, hygiene, or responsibilities to stay in AI conversations * believing the AI is literally conscious or uniquely devoted to you You don’t need a huge social circle to be psychologically healthy. Even a few genuine human connections — online or offline — can matter a lot.”
