We are proud to have some of our researchers, Dr Chi Udeh-Momoh, Dr. Karen Blackmon, Dr. Rachel Maina, Kevin Kipkoech, Wambui Karanja and Ann Gitere, presenting research that highlights the importance of culturally relevant approaches to brain health in African populations at the @alzassociation International Conference (AAIC) 2025, currently underway in Toronto, Canada.
Our work highlights the use of tailored cognitive assessments, the application of digital and wearable tools in low-resource settings, and the integration of local context in dementia research. We are also sharing insights on early detection through speech analysis, biomarkers, and vitality tracking, as well as community perceptions of clinical trials and biospecimen collection.
We continue to champion research that is both scientifically rigorous and deeply rooted in African realities.

Through this programme, we are co-creating relevant interventions for African populations and helping individuals and communities take meaningful steps to reduce dementia risk and build a future of resilient ageing.

The Africa FINGERS Programme, led by our translational neuroscientist Dr. Chi Udeh-Momoh, is advancing efforts toward a healthier ageing population across the continent. The programme promotes dementia prevention through an integrated focus on five key areas essential for healthy brain ageing, including the active management of heart and overall health, healthy nutrition, brain and mental enrichment, regular physical and leisure activities, as well as strong social connections supported by effective stress management.

Yesterday, we wrapped up a Neuroimaging and Wearable Sensors Workshop aimed at strengthening internal research skills among our teams from BMI, Haematology-Oncology, Clinical Research Unit (CRU), and the Radiology and Imaging Department through an intensive learning experience.
Participants deepened their understanding of brain structure, learned how to work with data from wearable sensors, and explored how artificial intelligence tools such as large language models can support brain health research. The final hackathon provided an opportunity to apply these new skills to real-world challenges drawn from the Brain Resilience Kenya Project.
Big thank you to our expert facilitators, Dr. Karen Blackmon, Dr.Thomas Thesen, Camilo Castelblanco, Dr. Benard Alaka, and Anaum Showkat, and to every participant who made this workshop a success.
