@LoganGrafTax I like service industry as a start...S Corps are too broad niche IMO. I would dig into the service industry and see if there are specific sectors there that you could focus even further on....look at your existing clients...who in there do you most enjoy working with?
@LoganGrafTax I went the generalist route first, and had a ton of success but ultimately realized that the CPA firm industry was changing around me so fast and was quickly making the small, generalist practice irrelevant, so now, change of course for me - niche it is!
@LoganGrafTax Great question and already tons of great feedback. I would say go on your own but do NOT go the generalist route - NICHE DOWN DEEP. This is a scary proposition, especially in the early years, but I think you will save pain later if you nice right out of the gate.
@davidleary In addition, I am constantly see more and more folks in the industry calling themselves "thought leaders" who promise to grow your firm by X....1.) You can't give yourself the title "thought leader" 2.) It's pretty simple to grow your firm - serve people well and NICHE DEEP!
@Receipts_Damien @BlakeTOliver @salpotech There is no doubt! Unfortunately for progress in this industry, many CPA firm partners define fine as $400k per year...they figure that at that income level why change anything....not saying it is right, just stating some additional facts.
@Receipts_Damien @BlakeTOliver @salpotech Totally agree! But pointing out that historically most firms have been just fine without needing to know what a sales funnel was.
@mattrubush 100% - The future of small public accounting firms is niche - Like it or not. Niche we must. This is the reason we have made a strategic decision to build out a niche practice ourselves.
@joewoodard@BlakeTOliver@EnricoPalmerino @mattrubush @b0tkeeper As some one who is following this and enjoying some "accountants bickering" I will say that the point that needs to be made here is that I am dumbfounded that a company with $22MM+ in funding can't handle PR better than this...embarrassing.
