In an actual army you would easily be able to differentiate companies and leaders despite having the "same* armour.

Symbols and colours also are highly personalized and lossley unified by the leader.

The most common colour cloak of a Roman soldier was yellow with personalised designs on.
The depictions of Roman soldiers all having the same uniform was based on ancient artwork and then romanticised in Elizabethen and later Victorian art.
