Buddhist Psychologist now at peace with Jesus. Pastor. Counselor: helping Christian men navigate staying on track in their walk with God in a broken world
Edward Fisher makes the point that the law, for the believer, has not been silenced. We, however, hear it from a different place.
It no longer comes to him from the mount of judgment; it comes from the seat of mercy.
The tables of the law were not cast out of the ark, but above them stood the mercy seat, sprinkled with blood, where God met with his people in peace.
So it is with the believer.
The law remains, but its demands can no longer come against the believer as terms for obtaining life, because his life and righteousness are already found in another.
Read 1 Kings 22 this morning. Micaiah said "As the Lord lives, what the Lord says to me, that I will speak"
Fellow pastors, keep speaking the Word, especially in the face of sin and opposition (that Ahab and Jezebel!)
When Abraham intercedes for Sodom (Genesis 18), we might be tempted to see "principles for intercession for our lost neighbors"...but that misses where our eyes should be...
As he knows us (see 18:19), may we know him: the Judge of all the earth who is not only just but also merciful
As someone who counsels embodied souls, I strive to be growing in my capacity to offer help for the physical side of life. Looking forward to diving into Andrew Huberman’s recently published Protocols.
Perhaps it’s also a throwback to my early days in neuroscience and biology.
Oh, and none of that makes me a priest enamored with the zombies.
Jason, we had this very discussion in our Sunday school this morning! God counsels us with the hope of the gospel. It's so encouraging to me as well to see how he draws us out with questions, calling and inviting us to confess and repent. What a merciful Counselor we have, brother.

This father-daughter moment for Justin Verlander captures the blessing I read about this morning in Psalm 127 (ESV): [3] Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward. [4] Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth. [5] Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate.
Today, I had two counselees wrap up our time together, both on the same day.
It just struck me how much of a privilege it is to walk alongside brothers, see the Lord meet them, watch them grow, and then see them launch into the next part of their walk with the Lord.
Fellow pastors and counselors, remember these "wins" for the times when you're tromping through the valley.
My days in the academic world of social psychology remind me that there are often many social factors involved in the shifting social contexts for our 'neighbors'.

This pushes me in counseling to listen well, and not assume I know someone simply because they present as "middle class" or "depressed" or "married".
Story matters.
Satan is an evil enemy that assaults us with lies and accusations and fears.
Grateful for the words of Psalm 144, redirecting us to who God is:
1 Blessed be the Lord, my rock,
who trains my hands for war,
and my fingers for battle;
2 he is my steadfast love and my fortress,
my stronghold and my deliverer,
my shield and he in whom I take refuge,
who subdues peoples under me. (ESV)

What else is simply hard-wired into a boy's nature?
"Praise the LORD!
Praise the LORD, O my soul!
I will praise the LORD as long as I live;
I will sing praises to my God while I have my being." - Psalm 146:2
In Genesis 18 today and we the 80s classic, El Shaddai:
"El Shaddai, El Shaddai,
El Elyon-na, Adonai
age to age You're still the same,
by the power of the name."
New counselors I supervise feel overwhelmed by all that goes into caring well for others.
But counseling is like learning anything else. Stick to the basics.
Listen closely. Get to know the other person. Be curious about how it all ties to Jesus.
Pray. And then pray again.

I recently attended a pastoral symposium on theological perspectives on the Trinity (classical trinitarianism vs. eternal relations of authority and submission).
Two opposing views were presented.
Biblical truth was front and center.
Representing the opposing position accurately mattered.
Being charitable mattered too.
Weighty matters were reflected on and our hearts were stirred to worship our great God.
So it’s possible to do this…hey, biblical counseling world, can we give this a try too?
