Let me tell you about the corruption aspect here, at least in all municipalities in MH.

When you submit an appl to trim trees, they take a min of six months to come and do it, so you have to plan in advance.

On top of that, they often don’t come and cut the trees unless Rs 10,000 is paid. At least that was the rate in Viman Nagar, Pune under @PMCPune

So this boy died because someone may have been unwilling to pay this bribe, or perhaps was unaware that the @mybmc officials were waiting for their “hafta.”

MH is now being blessed with a lot of industries, but at the same time, it is also one of the most corrupt states in India.

मार्च 2026 में कोलकाता की बालीगंज विधानसभा सीट की वोटर लिस्ट से मेरा नाम हटा दिया गया। वजह यह बताई गई कि विशेष गहन पुनरीक्षण (SIR) के दौरान न तो मेरा और न ही मेरे दिवंगत पिता का नाम 2002 की वोटर लिस्ट में मिला।

मेरे पिता गांधीवादी थे, प्रोफेसर रहे और केरल में गांधी स्मारक निधि के राज्य सचिव भी थे। उनका 2016 में निधन हो गया। आज तक समझ नहीं आया कि इतने जिम्मेदार मतदाता का नाम वोटर लिस्ट में कैसे नहीं था।

पश्चिम बंगाल के करीब 27 लाख लोगों की तरह मेरा नाम भी "तार्किक गड़बड़ियों" का हवाला देकर हटा दिया गया। मैंने अपनी 10वीं की मार्कशीट भी जमा कर दी, लेकिन फिर भी कोई वजह नहीं बताई गई। अब मेरी अपील सुप्रीम कोर्ट के निर्देश पर बने एक ट्रिब्यूनल में लंबित है। इसी वजह से मैं हाल का चुनाव भी नहीं लड़... बल्कि वोट भी नहीं डाल सका।

इससे भी बड़ी परेशानी मेरे पासपोर्ट रिन्यूअल में आई।

19 मार्च 2026 को मैंने बायोमेट्रिक की सारी प्रक्रिया पूरी कर ली थी, लेकिन पुलिस वेरिफिकेशन इसलिए पास नहीं हुआ क्योंकि मेरा नाम वोटर लिस्ट में नहीं है। मैंने कई दूसरे दस्तावेज़ भी दिए, लेकिन कहा गया कि वे पर्याप्त नहीं हैं।

आज, 27 जून 2026, मेरे बायोमेट्रिक हुए पूरे 100 दिन हो चुके हैं। पिछले हफ्ते पासपोर्ट कार्यालय ने मुझे आधिकारिक तौर पर बताया कि कोलकाता पुलिस ने मेरे खिलाफ प्रतिकूल रिपोर्ट भेजी है, क्योंकि मेरा नाम वोटर लिस्ट से हटा दिया गया है।

मुझे तुरंत रीजनल पासपोर्ट ऑफिस आने को कहा गया, लेकिन जब मैंने अपॉइंटमेंट मांगी तो तारीख 17 जुलाई 2026 की मिली।

इसी बीच मेरी बेटी, जो कैलिफोर्निया में पत्रकार है, की 17 अप्रैल को सैन फ्रांसिस्को में शादी हो गई। मेरे पास 10 साल का वैध अमेरिकी वीज़ा होने के बावजूद मैं सिर्फ इसलिए अपनी बेटी की शादी में नहीं जा सका क्योंकि मेरा पासपोर्ट रिन्यू नहीं हुआ था।

आज हालत यह है कि मैं खुद को एक तरह की नागरिक अनिश्चितता में पाता हूं। हाल ही में सरकार ने भी कहा था कि पासपोर्ट नागरिकता का सबूत नहीं है।

अब मेरा ज़्यादातर समय पुराने पारिवारिक रिकॉर्ड और दशकों पुराने दस्तावेज़ जुटाने में निकल रहा है।

हर सुबह उठकर मैं सबसे पहले अपनी वोटर लिस्ट वाली अपील और पासपोर्ट का स्टेटस देखता हूं। फिर उस कॉलेज को लिखता हूं जहां मेरी मां 1965 में पढ़ाती थीं और उस स्कूल को भी जहां से उन्होंने 1959 में पढ़ाई पूरी की थी, ताकि कोई ऐसा रिकॉर्ड मिल जाए जिससे साबित हो सके कि वे इस देश में थीं। स्कूल ने मदद की, लेकिन कॉलेज ने नहीं।

इसी तरह मैं केरल के पुराने सामाजिक कार्यकर्ताओं से भी संपर्क करता हूं और उनसे मेरे पिता की अवैध शराब और सांप्रदायिकता के खिलाफ चलाए गए अभियानों की कोई फोटो या अखबार की कटिंग मांगता हूं।

कुछ करीबी दोस्तों और सार्वजनिक जीवन के लोगों ने मेरी मदद की है। लेकिन मुझे नहीं पता कि किसी मीडिया संस्थान या पत्रकार संगठन ने मेरे मामले में कोई दिलचस्पी दिखाई।

एक वरिष्ठ पत्रकार ने मुझसे कहा कि यह सिर्फ मेरी कहानी नहीं है। सदियों से करोड़ों भारतीय रोज़ इसी तरह की अस्वीकृति और सरकारी परेशानियों का सामना करते आए हैं। मैं उनकी इस बात से सहमत हूं।

मेरा मकसद खुद को पीड़ित दिखाना नहीं है। मैं सिर्फ यह बताना चाहता हूं कि अगर एक ऐसा व्यक्ति, जिसने पूरी जिंदगी पत्रकारिता की और एक जाना-माना अखबार संपादित किया, उसे भी इतनी मुश्किलों का सामना करना पड़ सकता है, तो सोचिए समाज के सबसे कमजोर लोगों पर क्या बीतती होगी।

क्या मैंने किसी अखबार से इस बारे में बात की? नहीं। क्योंकि मैं नहीं चाहता था कि यह सिर्फ मेरी निजी कहानी बनकर रह जाए।

क्या संपादकों और पत्रकारों को मेरे मामले की जानकारी है? बिल्कुल है, कई लोगों को है। और अगर किसी को नहीं है, तो फिर उन्हें पत्रकारिता में नहीं होना चाहिए।

लेकिन इस पूरे मामले पर अखबारों की चुप्पी ने मेरे उस शक को और मजबूत कर दिया है कि तथाकथित मुख्यधारा की पत्रकारिता का अब आम लोगों की जिंदगी से बहुत कम लेना-देना रह गया है।

अब मैं कोई अखबार पढ़ता नहीं हूं। बस कभी-कभी सरसरी निगाह से देख लेता हूं, लेकिन उसमें ऐसा कुछ नहीं मिलता जो मुझे पढ़ने के लिए मजबूर करे।

The BMC sent Mumbai an unsigned note explaining that a ₹248 crore flyover is meant to open cracked, and will smooth out once we drive on it.

This is a blanket admission the road was opened unfinished, with the public’s vehicles left to do the final compaction the contractor was paid for. The same contractor who was already penalised ₹1 lakh a day for delay, and who hiked the project cost three times in 7 years.

I’ve written to BMC Commissioner @AshwiniBhide and Mayor @TawdeRitu. There are strict @MORTHIndia and IRC guidelines on evenness and riding quality of finished roads. They are not optional.

If the Bridges Department inspected this and found no deficiency, the readings exist. @mybmc must publish them and put a name to the clarification.
