Unsurprisingly it quite differs from the source material, although the story generally stays the same. I love that the characters are highly complex, deeply flawed, intensely developed, and burdened with so much love and hate. 4.5/5 for this bold, ambitious, controversial film.
Huge Wins
Actress: Kate Hudson (her best performance and my favourite film of the year)
Visual Effects: Jurassic World Rebirth (underrated!)
Biggest shock: Wicked: For Good got 0 noms while the first film had 10. Didn’t like it as much either but def deserved casting and crafts.
2026 Oscar Nominations — Surprise Snubs
Director: Guillermo del Toro
Actress: Amanda Seyfried, Chase Infiniti (huge shock considering she got Globes, CCA and SAG noms) Supporting Actor: Paul Mescal
Imo the best performances this year were Hugh Jackman and J Law, sadly snubbed.
Caught an 8.30pm screening of #ThePhoenicianScheme. It’s very much what Wes has been doing ever since The French Dispatch — if you’re interested in seeing what antics he’s up to, you’ll appreciate this. And Mia Threapleton constantly had me thinking of Florence Pugh. That’s neat.
Thunderbolts* is unlike any MCU film that has come before, utilising its heightened reality as a visual expression of something deeper. I appreciate the metaphors of succumbing to depression (the villain), exploitation of vulnerability, internal battles and shared struggles. 4/5!
Just watched UNIVERSAL LANGUAGE.
Its stylistic execution brings to mind Wes Anderson and Playtime, and its vignettes are made up of quirky impossible scenarios involving characters who bob in and out of the film. Its third act won me over, one that’s meaningful and melancholic.
A delightful time at the cinema though it’s one of the weaker Disney live-action remakes. Anyway, the crafts are outstanding across set design, costumes, makeup prosthetics, VFX and the Oscar-worthy Waiting On A Wish. Topped with a great message of finding the good within people.
Finally watched #Nosferatu in a cinema with the intricate sound design, crushed blacks, and the 1.66 : 1 aspect ratio filling up almost the entire screen. This slowburn gothic horror is an utterly immersive spectacle, cementing Eggers as one of today’s best filmmakers. 4.5/5.
Watched this at the cinema and it’s a masterpiece. I would describe this as a sci-fi political dark comedy war satire, and yes it delivers on all fronts. It cleverly uses its concept to explore a range of quirky scenarios that left me in awe of its creativity and writing. 4.5/5!
