@dr_obbs@bernie_collins1@RacecarEngineer Iβm so glad you like those articles! I realised there was little info out there that actually explains the mechanics of grip so I thought Iβd write my own! π
In this piece, I explain:
β‘οΈ How e-motor dynos work
β‘οΈ Permanent magnet motors
β‘οΈ PWM switching frequencies
β‘οΈ Silicon carbide inverters
β‘οΈ Battery emulators
β‘οΈ Typical test programmes
β‘οΈ Latest F1 testing strategies

The most difficult piece I have written in a while, but I learnt so much on EV powertrain testing!π‘
Huge thanks to the companies who helped me with this piece π
A sneak preview below β¬οΈ
The full article is in the latest issue of @RaceEngineTech β‘οΈ https://t.co/OvVPZooMRy
@CallumJCParr @mattpt55 Haha! I feel like Iβm a bit out of the loop with the whole F1 scene at the moment so not sure I could add much value but I think I still have my mic somewhere! π
When I was in F1, one of the tyre blankets was removed too early so the car left the garage with one tyre a few degrees cooler. This never got up to temperature throughout the stint π₯Ά
F1 tyres are so sensitive, one degree can significantly affect performance π‘οΈ
How long do @F1 tyres spend in tyre blankets and what temperature are they heated to? ππ‘οΈ
βͺπ‘π΄ SLICKS -> Maximum of 2hrs at 70degC
π’ INTERMEDIATES -> Maximum of 2hrs at 60degC
π΅ WETS -> No preheating allowed

@Lew15H Yeh I actually wrote an article for @RacecarEngineer on the difference between road/street courses and ovals with that pit lane closed rule - was so interesting!
@momedic9019 Ah I see - thanks. Itβs difficult to get IndyCar in the UK! So do they mostly overcut rather than undercut because of the slower warm up on new tyres?
Engineers have a crucial role in innovating technologies that can help us be more efficient with the world's resources, time & money π
If you know anyone who is interested in engineering, whatever their gender, race or background then spread the word - engineering is awesome
Happy International Women in Engineering day! βοΈ π
Hi five β to all the incredible female engineers I have met throughout my career - you are inspirational so this is an appreciation post for you π

Engineering is not just a subject, it's a way of thinking and approaching problems. It can lead to building racecars, aircraft, rockets or wind turbines π
We need more engineers!
@Rhinopt Haha no wonder what a race it was! Iβm a bit out of the loop with endurance racing at the mo, but I switched it on and just couldnβt switch it off!
Hello Twitter π
It's been a looooong time since I posted anything - how is everyone's June going?
Mine had a wobbly start but the strategy has come good the last week! π
@JennieGow Really sorry to hear this. You are one of the nicest motorsport people I have ever met. Be patient with yourself as you recover, work will always be there. Youβve got this Jennie πππ
For all my @F1 followers - check out @brrrake and watch the race alongside a former F1 trackside engineer!
Can't get better insight than from someone who has actually been there and done it! π
