@dcyimbys Yeah but, without appropriate guard rails, those areas wouldn’t be as beautiful. Beauty has intrinsic uplifting value for psychological well being. It’s why we visit European old towns for vacation.

@FarooqTirmizi @dcyimbys People are NIMBY for beauty — and they know the new buildings that would replace the old will be ugly and soulless. Build beautiful and it doesn’t matter as much (or at least, this makes higher density in-fill developments much more palatable). That’s the solution.

@dcyimbys Wrong. People are part of the equation, but so is the distinctive beauty of Georgetown, Capitol Hill, the monuments, etc. You destroy that when you build ugly things. You want more people, you need people to be OK with new buildings, and that’s helped by them being beautiful.

@IDoTheThinking Largest volume of intact Victorian-style housing in US is in Capitol Hill DC. Can find a bunch in Baltimore/Richmond too. Lots of places in NE have intact historic neighborhoods. Hell even places like Cincinnati / Louisville / etc have nice downtown cores. OP is ignorant.

@andrewbstern I think you can win an argument in America for Dutch beautiful (pre WWII architecture) gentle urbanism, but you will definitely lose if you go for Asian urbanism.
