We didn't expect this in our Irish Neolithic genomes, the son of a union between first degree relatives interred in the ceremonial heart of UNESCO site, Newgrange passage tomb @_larsporsena@tcdgenmicro@tcddublin

@SeoigheCathal@mhdelaney @GenomicsMed Cathal, feel free to define exactly where you think the analogy fails.
The point is that genomics information is complex, it needs to be explained clearly when people sign up for studies, it’s not happening in Ireland.
There are ways of doing it right, they should be adopted.
There seems to be confusion about genomics and privacy issues in #Ireland at present, highlighted in this recent piece by @mhdelaney. A thread 1/

@mhdelaney @GenomicsMed 12/ If people understood this, they would be much more careful about sharing this information. It can and should be shared in the interests of public health and personal care, but there need to be *really* careful safeguards and guarantees in place to protect your intimate data.
@mhdelaney @GenomicsMed 11/ What's more, when you have that genomic equivalent of a nude picture, taking that analogy further you can now generate pretty accurate pictures of your brother and sister naked, your children naked, your cousins naked.
Genomically-speaking.
Laudable by @GenomicsMed.
And now some #Irish genomes are being loaded into the @EGAarchive, they *all* can be.

Great to see the gnomAD papers out, congrats all! I’m struck by how much more genetic variation there is to explore. Excited for a future with more genomics of understudied pops. @VariantBio is contributing to this future with WGS studies underway across 4 continents. 🌏 🌍 🌎
From @klillington, something that should be in place in Ireland that could also help to guide how to balance considerations in genomic medicine and research.
