During my freshman year of college, our chemistry professor had a policy where if your phone rang during a lecture, you had to answer it on speakerphone in front of the entire class. It was designed to embarrass people so they'd keep their phones silent. Usually, it was just moms calling to ask about laundry, which was boring. But in mid-November, this guy in the front row had his phone go off. He looked terrified, but the professor made him put it on speaker. The voice on the other end was a very gruff, older man who immediately said, "Hey, the alpaca got loose again. It's in the neighbor's pool. I need you to bring the long rope." The kid just closed his eyes, sighed, and said, "Dad, I'm in chemistry." The dad paused for a second and then yelled, "Well, tell your teacher that the alpaca is drowning and your GPA doesn't matter if we lose the breeding male!" The professor didn't even hesitate. He just waved his hand and said, "Go, save the alpaca." The kid ran out, and we never spoke of it again, but he did get an A on the final.
