The Phaya Si Sattanakarat worship ceremony is a traditional Thai and Lao spiritual ceremony held every year in Nakhon Phanom to honor Phaya Si Sattanakarat, a revered Naga (mythical serpent) believed to protect the Mekong River and the people who live around it.

During the ceremony, people make offerings such as flowers, candles, incense, and fruit while prayers and blessings are led by religious and ceremonial leaders. They do this to express gratitude and ask for protection, good health, prosperity, and good fortune.

Engfa has the honor of serving as the lead Nang Ram (traditional ceremonial dancer), leading approximately 3,000 ceremonial dancers in today’s procession. As the lead dancer, she performs a graceful Thai classical dance as an offering of respect and devotion. The dance is a sacred part of the ceremony and is meant to honor Phaya Si Sattanakarat rather than entertain an audience. Being chosen for this role is considered a great honor and reflects the importance of the ceremony.

Because the ceremony is held every year and is one of Nakhon Phanom’s most important cultural events, it attracts large numbers of worshippers and tourists from across Thailand and neighboring countries. Besides its spiritual significance, the event also helps support the local economy by bringing business to hotels, restaurants, markets, transportation services, and local vendors.
