If you’re a patient who’s taken your 23andMe DNA testing results along to your GP to find out what it all means and found the doctor can’t tell you, you’re not alone.

Genomics Aotearoa mourns the loss of our board member Dr Warren Parker CNZM, who died suddenly on 29/12/23. Warren was a man of conviction and action who, through logic, respect for others and a constantly positive attitude, sought to make Aotearoa New Zealand a better place.
The next international seminar in Asia-Pacific region will be held on September 28 with Prof Jun Kitano (National Institute of Genetics, Japan) speaking. It’s online and free. Register via the link in the flyer below. Please re-tweet.
Georgia Cullen is a PhD student in @peterkdearden's lab and will be presenting her talk "How Larval Development Supports the Reproductive Needs of the Adult Honeybee Queen" at #ICG2023 in Room 212/3 at 11.15am(AEST) today!👑🐝
It pays to treat a baby queen bee like a queen. Honeybee queens grow the cells of future children when they themselves are still larvae: mistreat them and the children suffer, says Georgia Cullen @otagobiochemistry #ICG2023@genetics2023

One of the best scientific collaborations I’ve been involved in: huge thanks to the many experts in diverse fields from around the world who have helped #kakapo#conservation by working to understand this #disease. #parrots
And of course a team of national and international scientists including @TheAtavism@BevanWeir Travis Glare, Johanna Rhodes, John Perrott, Mathew Fisher, Jason Stajich, the Kakapo Aspergillus research consortium, @takapodigs and Murray Cox. You folks are awesome.
Come read our new paper. Led by @TheAtavism and funded by Genomics Aotearoa. A single fungal strain was the unexpected cause of a mass aspergillosis outbreak in the world’s largest and only flightless parrot https://t.co/hwDN4pUIx2
Our latest #kakapo#microbiome paper is now online as a preprint! We ran a genome-wide association study (#GWAS) using multiple measures of bacterial diversity as phenotypes; check it out here:

@bugblokenz@OtagoMuseum Thanks Rob!
We have also been working with @OtagoMuseum to develop some community programs related to genomics that will run over the summer. More details soon...
Here's a little spoiler for one event that I'm particularly excited about: 🦕🧬🎥🏃♀️
Excited to share our #Conservation#Genomics#Kākāpō#Preprint! Can we find associations for fitness-related traits in a critically endangered species? With 5 decades of phenotypes, species-wide sequencing, and an awesome group of folks #YesWeCan 🧵 1/n https://t.co/pn4jSGQbsx
eResearch: LAST DAY TO SUBMIT! Spread the word and send us your abstracts for work that innovates, showcases or celebrates capability, connectivity or equity in eResearch. Submissions close tonight 31 Oct at 11:59pm NZDT! https://t.co/47W7Ax1CDH
