They have taken the football away from the children.

Every detail of Barça Academy’s Lefkoşa camp - dates, venue, programme - has been removed from FC Barcelona’s official website and event map. The Greek Cypriot football federation consulted UEFA and went to the Spanish federation to stop it.

The far-right party ELAM has spent today celebrating. “Our target has been achieved,” they announced, saluting their government for acting so quickly. Their next target is already named: our universities appearing in the QS World University Rankings under “North Cyprus.”

So let us ask plainly.

Are these our compatriots? Are these the Cypriot brothers and sisters we are told we must build a common future with? People who work the phones to stop children playing football?

It was a children’s football camp. Ages six to eighteen. It is not as though Lamine Yamal had landed in Northern Cyprus. It was an academy camp - coaching sessions on a pitch at a university.

And they went to UEFA over it.

Every child who was looking forward to those two weeks now knows exactly what these people think of them.
