⚫He was the sheriff. He resigned in July 2025 after he was charged with sexual assault. Weeks later he was charged in a separate case with second-degree forcible rape.

⚫He is also charged with sexual battery, soliciting prostitution, and assault on a female.

⚫He has been free on bond since the charges were filed.

⚫Last month his lawyer, Jack Stewart, filed papers saying he will assert mental incapacity or mental illness that would render Cochran incapable of proceeding to trial.

⚫The hearing is set for November 4 in Swain County Superior Court in Bryson City.

Second-degree forcible rape is a Class C felony in North Carolina.

If convicted, the range is about 4 to 15 years, depending on his record. He would also have to register as a sex offender for life.
