Embarking on the next adventure

After almost 16 years at Reuters, a third of a working lifetime, it’s time to set out on the next stage of my journey.

Entering the building for the first time in 2008, with the financial crisis raging, I planned to stay no more than 2-3 years before moving on.

Since then, however, I’ve reinvented the role several times, and been given a fantastic amount of freedom to experiment.

Like most people, I am a creature of habit and routine. But the most important lesson I’ve learned over my career is the need to innovateand evolve, because the opposite is stagnation and obsolescence.

So it’s time to move on to the next challenge; I want to look back and say I made the most of my brief time in this world. I first reached this decision a couple of years ago; now seems like a good time to put it into action.

I’d like to thank Michael Lawrence and Richard Mably for taking a chance hiring me all those years ago and giving me the freedom to experiment and do things very differently. I hope I have repaid your trust.

I’d also like to express my appreciation to all my editors, sub-editors and colleagues over the years for their help and friendship. You have saved me from countless errors and made me a better writer.

A special tribute must go to my amazing colleagues - Andy Home, Clyde Russell, Karen Braun and Gavin Maguire. No other small team has had such an enormous impact. I have been honoured to work with you and you have made me incredibly proud.

Finally, I want to thank you, my readers, for all the kind words and constructive feedback. When I launched my own newsletter ten years ago, I could not have imagined it would grow to be read by 12,000 people every week or that my columns would be some of the most-read articles on the newswire. I have learned an immense amount from you - and that’s what has made the job worthwhile.

Before I retire in 10-15 years time, I hope to have one or two more roles, so I plan to take a few months to decide what I’d like to do next.

I’ll be working a few more weeks at Reuters; even after that I’ll still be around. I look forward to staying in touch as the next stage of the journey begins.
