George Lucas explains that “the audience doesn’t know what they want to see” in a new interview.
“If they don’t like a character, that’s interesting, and as a filmmaker I want to find out why. But when the studios hear that, they take the wrong message. They let the audience actually make the movie. Of course, now they go crazy with that. Now, it’s all about what the fans think. That isn’t how you make the movie. You make a movie by finding someone that knows how to make movies, that has a story to tell and is passionate about it.”

That’s progress, it’s the future…If you want AI that tells you when something is fake and where it came from, AI can do that. Humans can’t, we’re not that smart. The whole idea is you’re a human being, you’re responsible for what you say and what you do, and if you’re doing something that’s illegal you should be punished for that. Whatever you do, you should be recognised. It’s just like real life.”

FACES OF DEATH is a clever, meta reimagining of the 1978 film that damningly critiques our social media-dominated society’s fascination with and desensitization to violence. Structurally, it plays out like a conventional serial killer thriller, but there’s real craft underlying the filmmaking. Dacre Montgomery terrifies as a deeply unsettling serial killer determined to use violence to achieve social media fame. Doesn’t go nearly as extreme as the marketing material would have you think, but there’s a tense and at times quite funny movie to be enjoyed here.

We’ve seen the first 8 episodes of MAUL - SHADOW LORD and can confirm it elevates Star Wars animation to incredible new heights. The series is darker and more serious than any other Star Wars animated show, feeling more akin to Heat and The Dark Knight than Clone Wars or Rebels. Sam Witwer is phenomenal as a more calculated yet still deeply vengeful Maul. The show does well to deepen our understanding of Maul without redeeming him, primarily through a number of fascinating philosophical conversations about the Jedi, Sith, and the state of the galaxy. It mirrors the drama and tone of Andor, while leaning into the mysticism of the Force and the enduring franchise theme of masters and apprentices. The changes to the animation style bring an intensity and aggression that match the tone of the show and the psyche of our lead character. Devon Izara and Brander Lawsen make for compelling additions to the Star Wars galaxy. It makes sense why a Season 2 has been commissioned so early. This is a huge win for those who have loved Maul since 1999.
