He’s stating that God’s truth and messiah has come through the line of David, but it’s ultimately of God.

Sounds contradictory, but you will first have to point out the contradiction.

If you freely chose to follow him why couldn’t that imply he chose you first?

It’s just not free to do anything but sin before God changes it. But it does freely sin nonetheless.
