@mporeilly @KeithMcilwain @revbkaylor I suppose my problem is that there’s an attempt to solve complex theological issues by trying to get to a legally binding doctor in scripture. I think the simple affirmation of accepting scripture as the ruler guide for Doctor ethics oughta be sufficient

@mporeilly @KeithMcilwain Bishop Armstrong in Indiana in the 80s said to a group of pastors that the Bible was clear that homosexuality was a sin, but we in the church today need to decide what it believes that the Bible did not have all the info we have. That is rejecting its normative value

@mporeilly @KeithMcilwain I would add that it is what shapes our discernment of the acts and will of God. Too many debates on authority of scripture tend to seek a legal answer rather than prayer and discernment. OT is normative through the lens of the NT.

@mporeilly @KeithMcilwain I came from a denomination that affirmed inerrancy, I am not sure “all that it affirms” does more work than affirming scripture is our norm for forming belief and how we live, or our rule for faith and practice

@mattvanswol @BillMelugin_ The number is closer to 15 to 18,000,000, but and of course, I don’t know you but somebody tossing out that figure I suspect wants to exaggerate. Given the lower number it was it would still take plenty of years to remove all.

@mporeilly Matt, I am a UM Retired Pastor with a lot of sympathies with the GMC, with the good news movement within the UMC in my past, but when GMC formed, this was one of my concerns. My affirmation of the normative quality of the apostolic witness never seems to be enough.

One of the recurring questions leading up to the Global Methodist Church General Conference concerns the proposed Article of Faith on Scripture.

Why doesn’t it simply say that Scripture is “without error”? Why add the words “in all it affirms”?

Those words are doing important theological work.
