Both of our current exhibitions, Finding a Home at the Fry ( curated by @ellaravilious ) and Richard Bawden, the Hadleigh Years offer insight into the domestic artistic practices of artists in our collection who lived and work in N W Essex. Clutter, by Richard Bawden
Caravans, Eric Ravilious, 1934. Painted near Peggy Angus’ cottage at Furlongs, in East #Sussex. In her autobiography, Eric’s wife Tirzah describes how she restored these caravans for them to use & painted the wheels red. The original artwork is in the collection of @FryArtGallery
Hey @AgeasUK how about you reply to my many letters about the insurance scam in 2023 which has left an accident wrongly listed under my name and address even though I was 100 miles away asleep in my bed at the time? It affects the premiums I'm quoted and I need you to correct it
Really looking forward to a free talk @WCCLibraries by the wonderful Catherine Clarke on poems that tell the history of London (1 October). We'll be talking VCH London too! Sign up here: https://t.co/ffRBc2H0qh
While I was sleeping: 2 years ago some b*****d used my name/address to insure a car, didn’t pay the premium, crashed into a 3rd party in the back streets of Boston, Lincs, at 3:20am. I’ve still not managed to get my name off this incident. It pops up whenever we need insurance
Today we were delighted to welcome our first visitors to ‘Richard Bawden, the Hadleigh Years’ an opportunity to view and buy a selection of later works from Richard’s creative life. Like the Fry Gallery, Richard started a new phase in 1985 when he and his wife Hattie bought their house in Hadleigh.
He drew constantly in his house and garden, creating watercolours, etchings and linocuts. He moved freely between these different media, using his exceptional drawing skill and sensitive but varied colour palette, at times combining printmaking techniques or hand colouring etchings.
The exhibition in the Gibson Room comprises a selection of framed and unframed works, some of which will be for sale. Where framed works are purchased, they will need to be collected from the gallery after the end of the exhibition, on Monday 27 October or Wednesday 29 October.

Visiting @thejohnrylands today to look at a manuscript which contains two very early English conversion narratives - both dating to the 1630s and both written by women! VOICES OF THUNDER begins with the remarkable story of Rose Thurgood, one of these women #earlymodern
Installation in progress…Richard Bawden, the Hadleigh Years opens next weekend on 26 July in the Gibson Room. A versatile painter, printmaker, illustrator and designer, there’s such warmth, wit and keen observational detail to enjoy in Bawden’s later works. This very special commemorative exhibition is curated by John Ready and Hattie Bawden #fryartgallery #saffronwalden #greatbardfieldartists #essexevents
'The Bleaching Ground.' (1882) The element of labour, which at the turn of the 20thC was an important theme of Max Liebermann’s work, takes a back seat. We can see how he is being influenced by the French Impressionists in the use of light, colours, and a dynamic composition.
#OTD The 1872 Ballot Act introduced the requirement for parliamentary elections to be held by secret ballot. It also ended the often unruly system of public nominations, and had some other unintended consequences too, as Dr Philip Salmon explains: https://t.co/yVBPMYhyWh
Dagenham’s last surviving manor house is to have its defensive moat restored after the local council secured £800,000 of funding.
