@FernRiddell Some cases I'm writing about are Spring-Heeled Jack, Maiden Tribute, and a family murder/suicide allegedly inspired by MT. Mostly focus on 1880-1900, but have a broader interest in the long-nineteenth century. https://t.co/kYi27sTPdK
@FernRiddell Hello from Glasgow! I'm a PhD student researching gothic narrativizations of gender violence in the lead up to the Whitechapel murders; I look at how the press drew upon and engaged with popular and gothic fiction when reporting on sexual/physical violence against women/girls
Also impressed PowerPoint & eduroam held out that long, then strategically crashed for that specific discussion', on that particular frame. Not even mad. 10/10.
Taught my 1st class on Fantasy TV today, focusing on WandaVision. One student hadn't seen it. After discussing the history of seriality, plot twists & cliffhangers, the clip I ended the seminar w. froze & we witnessed them live the experiences we were talking about. Perfection.
And yes, of course it was accidentally (partly) spoiled after, but it was a beautiful moment perfectly demonstrating all we'd talked about on the development of Fantasy TV shows over the years. *chef's kiss*.
I love finding traces of how past readers engaged with magazines - clearly, someone really wanted the illustration that accompanied this article in Miss Modern!
Such excellent discussions on so many interesting & important topics about fantasy & the educational/commercial spheres we encounter it. Couldn't attend? The good news is that a recording will be available post-conference! #GIFCon2024@madeline_cct @hopefulmirrlees @Anjirbaguette
