“I’ll be 70 next year. And I’m not here to impress anyone. I’ve been the champion. I’ve been the villain. I’ve had gold around my waist and nothing in my soul. Now? I just want peace. Everything else is noise.”
I grew up where love was tough and fists were currency.
I didn’t learn kindness — I learned survival.
By 13, I was arrested 38 times.
By 20, I was the youngest heavyweight champion in history.
They called me “Iron Mike” — like I wasn’t supposed to bleed.
I had money, fame, mansions, tigers, private jets…
But I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t breathe.
The world saw knockouts.
I saw ghosts.
At 40, I started asking better questions.
Not “how do I win?”
But “why was I always fighting in the first place?”
And the truth?
I wasn’t fighting the other guy.
I was fighting myself. My fear. My father’s silence. My mother’s pain. My own shame.
Now, at 70, I’m not chasing anything.
I grow mushrooms.
I hug my pigeons.
I walk barefoot on grass and cry sometimes for no reason at all.
I talk more about forgiveness than uppercuts.
I don’t need the belt. I don’t need the roar of a crowd.
I just want to eat good fruit, tell the truth, and die knowing I broke the cycle.
If you want to know what greatness is — it’s not dominance. It’s healing.
It’s walking away from the thing that used to destroy you — and choosing not to destroy others with it".
— Mike Tyson
Today marks a significant milestone as Equity Bank officially opened its 217th branch in Kimilili, Bungoma County.
During the event, our Managing Director, Moses Nyabanda, reaffirmed Equity’s purpose of transforming lives, restoring dignity, and expanding opportunities for wealth creation. Our presence in Kimilili is a long-term commitment to walk together with the community as a trusted financial and development partner.
Kimilili’s economy thrives on agriculture, and Equity Bank is stepping up to be a catalyst for its growth. We recognize that agriculture is more than just an economic activity. It is a foundation for food security, job creation, and sustainable rural development.
In his remarks, Moses encouraged local entrepreneurs to form Chamas, emphasizing that collective financial power enables easier access to credit, greater resilience, and faster growth for businesses.

Equity Bank has committed Kshs. 25 million to support this year’s Kenya National Drama and Film Festival at all levels; national, regional, county, and sub-county.
This partnership aligns with our belief that education and arts play a crucial role in societal transformation.
Speaking during the partnership launch ceremony at Muhuri Muchiri High School in Ruai, Nairobi, Ministry of Education’s Head of Directorate Field Coordination and Co-curricular Activities, Nelson Sifuna, lauded Equity Bank for sponsoring the festivals saying, “We are gathered here to witness a momentous occasion. While others prefer to sponsor at the national level, Equity Bank begins at the grassroots, a testament to their commitment."
Equity Bank Kenya Managing Director, Moses Nyabanda, stated, “This moment is a testament to the power of collaboration, creativity, and the immense potential that lies within our young people. At Equity Bank, we believe that education is the cornerstone of societal transformation.”
The festival, themed "Liberating Technology to Nurture Talent while Inculcating Value for Social Prosperity," provides a platform for young creatives to express themselves while sharpening their skills.
"We are proud to reward outstanding schools, trainers, and participants with certificates, trophies, and cash prizes, fostering a future where creative talents thrive and become self-sustainable," added Mr Nyabanda.

We are pleased to announce a reduction in interest rates for the 3rd time, on all new and existing Kenya Shilling-denominated credit facilities, effective February 13th, 2025 for new loans and from 1st of March for existing loans. This follows the recent decision by the Central Bank of Kenya’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to cut the Central Bank Rate (CBR) by 50 basis points to 10.75% from 11.25% and the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) by 100 basis points to 3.25% from 4.25%.
Following this adjustment, we wish to inform our customers and the general public that, we will adjust the Equity Bank Reference Rate (EBRR) from 17.39% to 14.39% - a reduction of 300 basis points (3%). Consequently, the final interest rate will be EBRR (14.39%) plus a margin (a margin is based on a specific customer risk profile) per annum. This reduction reflects our commitment to making credit more affordable and accessible, furthering financial inclusion and stimulating economic activity across Kenya.
“We understand the financial pressures facing Kenyans today, and we're committed to doing our part to ease that burden. This rate cut is about more than just lower interest rates; it's about opening doors for Kenyans to invest in their businesses, support their families, and their livelihoods,” said Moses Nyabanda, Managing Director, Equity Bank (Kenya) Limited.
