Guess who else had problems with trains being attacked? That's right: the Rhodesians.

They could armor a locomotive or guard a bridge, but it could not permanently occupy every mile of track. The basic sabotage methods were explosives placed beneath or alongside rails to derail trains, demo charges intended to cut the line, obstacles placed across the track, small-arms ambushes including RPG attacks on locomotives and security vehicles, and secondary mines or ambushes intended to hit the response.

In response, the Rhodesian had armored trains. Since they couldn't guard the whole railway, the railroads were patrolled by troops on the ground and armored what Americans would call high-railers, basically rail trucks with guns. The vehicles themselves were armored because the patrol was extremely exposed. Unlike a road patrol, it couldn't suddenly leave the route. Everyone knew exactly where it had to travel.

Basically these were MRAPs on the rails or the concepts applied to the locomotives. These "trolleys" operated just ahead of the trains, often springing mines or ambushes.Armor could mitigate small-arms fire and some rocket attacks, but mines remained particularly troublesome because the blast occurred immediately beneath the running gear. Accounts from railway-security personnel describe locomotive crews surviving mine strikes but suffering blast injuries, including ruptured eardrums and severe shock.

Railway Security personnel, Guard Force and Army elements patrolled the tracks on foot and aboard railway vehicles. One surprisingly clever technique was spraying used oil onto the ballast. Fresh digging exposed lighter-colored stone underneath, making disturbed ballast much easier for a patrol to identify. The mines would be uncovered once found.

Was the goal to loot the trains? No, it was to damage the economy (the whole enemy strategy) by inhibiting rail transport. This was especially important on the rail line up from South Africa because basically this was how anything that couldn't be produced locally made it north.
