As a sports writer, I’ve found lots of the reaction to / coverage of Just Stop Oil really alarming. I think it says a lot about a lot of things, incl attitudes to the climate crisis and the role sport plays in it (thread)
@TheJackDearden Disagree on it not affecting other teams - Man Utd could have gone to a replay had CL's goal been allowed. Now they have less fixture congestion which could impact how they treat upcoming Prem games. Meanwhile NUFC go incorrectly 1-0 down without VAR. I get the logic but oh well.
I'll never not support the players on the field. But to throw all nuance out the window in the tribal sense of "Yay, my club is rich" is not something I am on board with. It's not a good day for football.
Very conflicted emotions on what is likely to be Takeover Day. On one hand, there's been no joy supporting Newcastle for many years. On the other, any on-field joy from this point will be tainted. Is that better than no joy? I don't know. 1/
..the game has become nowadays? Do we write it all off as the price to pay for success? If we excuse murder to feel a little pleasure at our football team, we've fallen a long way. And yes, government arms sales/trade deals is wrong too. 3/
Tonight’s incident at Red Bee Media in White City which has disrupted several TV channels reminds me there’s an obscure conspiracy theory that claims Red Bee owns the BBC through Swedish bankers and onwards into the Deep State. Yeah, not true.
