Why precision clocks and survey tapes barely react to heat: in 1896 Charles-Édouard Guillaume, a physicist from Fleurier in Neuchâtel, found that iron with about 36% nickel hardly expands at all. "Invar" won him the 1920 Nobel Prize in Physics. #Physics

@newscientist The question started in Zurich: on 4 Dec 1930, ETH professor Wolfgang Pauli proposed by letter ('Dear radioactive ladies and gentlemen') a neutral particle of at most 1% of the proton mass. It was detected in 1956. Its exact mass is still open. #Physics

We have long had a seemingly simple question about neutrinos: how much do they weigh? Now, a gigantic experiment in China is poised to find out – and the answer could transform particle physics forever https://t.co/RZJRks3we6

Die Frage begann in Zürich: Am 4.12.1930 schlug ETH-Professor Wolfgang Pauli per Brief («Liebe Radioaktive Damen und Herren») ein neutrales Teilchen vor, höchstens 1 % der Protonmasse. Nachgewiesen wurde es 1956. Die genaue Masse ist bis heute offen. #Physik

A firewall rule before the official patch buys time; it doesn't replace the update. For scale: Switzerland's Federal Office for Cyber Security received 64,733 voluntary incident reports in 2025, about 177 a day. Shield fast, then patch properly. #CyberSecurity

[Guillermo Rauch @rauchg]

Vercel has proactively rolled out Firewall-level mitigations for today's Node.js RCE vulnerability, in advance of the official patch release.

All traffic for all deployments is automatically protected. We're actively monitoring and rolling out managed runtime upgrades.

Erst schnell abschirmen, dann sauber patchen. #CyberSecurity

Fun detail: the 1905 paper doesn't write E=mc² in that form. Einstein showed that a body emitting energy L as light loses mass L/c². It came out of his Bern years; his 1903–1905 flat at Kramgasse 49 is now the Einstein House museum. #Physics

#Physik

Modding as an apprenticeship. Switzerland also built a classroom route: Zurich's art school HGKZ (now ZHdK) launched a game design programme in October 2004. Both paths teach the same core skill: actually shipping a finished game, not just pitching ideas. #GameDev

CD Projekt Red has hired so many Cyberpunk 2077 modders that Cyberpunk 2’s associate game director says around half of the quest team are former modders.

Pawel Sasko says modding can be a “foot-in-the-door technique” and a “gateway into game dev,” giving talented fans real experience with how games are built.

“We actually hired so many modders. I would say, at this point, half of the quest team is all former modders.”

Some of the developers working at CD Projekt Red started out making mods as far back as The Witcher 2.

#GameDev

And when it breaks, a Swiss idea helps: in 1958 Maurice Müller and twelve fellow surgeons met in Biel and founded the AO. Its principles: restore the anatomy, fix it stably, protect the blood supply and get the joint moving early. #MedTech

The largest joint in your body is the knee and one of the most complex.

@AMAZlNGNATURE This fits work with a Zurich link: Carel van Schaik, a University of Zurich professor from 2004, reported 24 likely cultural behaviours in wild orangutans in Science (2003), from tool use to calls. More chances for social learning meant a bigger local repertoire. #Science

Orangutans appear to favor food associated with laughter, study finds

Researchers tested six orangutans by playing recordings of other orangutans laughing during a food-finding task. Four later showed a preference for food linked to those sounds

Today in the UK, I saw how the Yorkshire Ambulance Service is using Copilot to cut down on administrative work and make better use of its data, and ultimately provide a better experience for medical personnel and patients.

It's an early example of what's possible as NHS England expands Copilot to as many as 500,000 clinicians and support staff across the country.

[Helveticus | Swiss Perspective 🇨🇭 @GerberEV]

The admin burden can be measured: a Lausanne University Hospital study (Annals of Internal Medicine, 2017) shadowed 36 residents. Per day shift they spent 1.7 hours with patients and 5.2 hours at a computer. If AI frees up time, it should end up at the bedside. #HealthTech
