My colleague, Dr. Pratishtha Poudel, and I are recruiting a fully funded PhD student in process-based soil carbon modeling, supported by a USDA NIFA grant. Excellent benefits, exceptional development opportunities, and a vibrant community. Scan the QR code to apply!
Soil organic carbon sequestration is one of the most cost-effective options for:
🤎#ClimateChange adaptation & mitigation
🤎combating desertification
🤎fighting land degradation
🤎achieving #FoodSecurity
Protecting our #soils means protecting our planet: https://t.co/RMnbx4qHJ2
We are recruiting two motivated and enthusiastic GRAs to work on soybean production and conservation practices. Come join our team, a highly-ranked Department and University, and a nice community.

Known worldwide for agricultural innovation and expertise in food policy and security, @WorldFoodPrize laureate and distinguished professor of @PurdueAgronomy Gebisa Ejeta was awarded the National Medal of Science by the @POTUS today. https://t.co/UgKtjrkeGb
We are so proud and happy to see our ASA & CSSA member, Gebisa Ejeta of @LifeAtPurdue, receive a National Medal of Science for outstanding contributions to the science of plant genetics. Congratulations, Dr. Ejeta!
About 95% of our food comes from soils.
But 33% of our soils are degraded, & nutrient imbalance is one of the leading causes.
Improving soil nutrient balance is an effective way to help ensure safe, nutritious food for all.

Soil respiration with intact clover
= 226 CO2 ppm / min
Clover respiration with soil removed
= 128 CO2 ppm / min
So I reckon much of the CO2 flux from the soil is actually from the plant roots….rather than soil biology.
How do we avoid losing carbon on tillage soils? Methods such as straw incorporation and cover crops can be used to add carbon back into the soil. Dermot Forristal tells us more from the #FarmingforSoilHealth event today in Johnstown Castle
Scientists in California made #biochar by heating local plant materials such as pistachio shells and date palm leaves. They tested how efficiently different temperatures of biochar removed three different antibiotics from #wastewater: https://t.co/lyT0QCLPg9

When food is lost or wasted, the land, labour, water, energy & all of the resources that went into producing it are being wasted too.
Reducing #FoodLoss & #FoodWaste means protecting the health of our one & only planet.
Let's all act: for people & 🌍!
Healthy soils mean healthy, safe & nutritious food.
