Many of today's strongest nations were once colonies.
🇺🇸 USA — Colonized by Britain. Independence: 1776. Today: World's largest economy.
🇨🇦 Canada — British and French colonies. Full sovereignty achieved gradually by 1982. Today: One of the world's wealthiest nations.
🇦🇺 Australia — British colony. Independence developed over time. Today: Advanced economy.
🇮🇳 India — British colony until 1947. Today: One of the fastest-growing major economies.
🇸🇬 Singapore — British colony until 1963. Today: Global financial hub.
🇳🇬 Nigeria — British colony until 1960. Africa's largest economy by GDP for many years.
Colonialism caused damage, exploitation, and setbacks. That part of history cannot be ignored.
But many countries that were colonized chose to focus on institutions, education, industry, innovation, and governance after independence.
If America spent 250 years blaming Britain, or if Singapore spent decades blaming its colonizers instead of building, they would not be where they are today.
History explains where nations started. It does not completely determine where they finish.
Nigeria has every right to discuss the effects of colonialism, but we also have a responsibility to build better institutions, demand accountability, and create the future we want.

Victor Munoz will be joining Liverpool. That’s better news for Madrid than Osasuna who sold him.
Real Madrid had sold him to Osasuna for €5 million just last year. This year, he’s been sold for 40 million, and Madrid will be pocketing €20 million of it.
You may not believe it, but Munoz is a La Masia product. Although, he left at just 14 for CF Damm, a respected Catalan youth set-up, before Real Madrid came calling in 2021 and brought him into their academy.
He was at Madrid until he left for Osasuna last year.
But when he left for Osasuna, Madrid did something clever. They sold only 50% of his economic rights for €5 million, while keeping the other 50%, a buy-back option, and crucially a 50% sell-on clause.
He had a brilliant breakout year at Osasuna, six goals from the wing, a Spain debut goal against Serbia, a World Cup squad place. He earned the move and Madrid earned some money.
