A 13-year-old boy performed a daring rescue during a deadly Russian missile strike that hit the Sumy city center on Palm Sunday.

On the morning of 13 April, as Kyrylo Illiashenko and his mother rode a city bus through the heart of Sumy, a Russian Iskander missile slammed into the area. The explosion tore through buildings and vehicles - including the bus they were on. The blast killed at least 35 people and injured 117 more, among them 15 children. Shrapnel struck Kyrylo in the head and arm. Glass ripped through his mother’s face.

Trapped. Bleeding. The bus doors jammed shut.

Kyrylo didn’t hesitate.

He forced his way to a window, shattered the glass, and climbed out - ignoring his own injuries. Then, in a scene eyewitnesses described as pure chaos, the teenager turned back and began pulling others to safety.

“He got out, but he didn’t run,” said Sumy Mayor Artem Kobzar. “He turned around, cleared the exit, and helped evacuate people from the wreckage.”

Once the bus was empty, Kyrylo continued down the street, helping victims who lay injured in the rubble.

Kyrylo, a student at School No.4 and an aspiring wrestler with the Fakel Youth Sports School, is now recovering in the hospital. Doctors have removed one of three shrapnel fragments lodged in his head. He’ll undergo further treatment this week. His mother has since been released from care.

Ukrainian officials have praised Kyrylo’s actions. The Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Minister of Internal Affairs acknowledged his bravery publicly, and his story has been widely shared on social media, where users have called him a “warrior in a schoolboy’s body.”

But Kyrylo has only said: “I just did what I could.”

The missile strike on Sumy is one of the most devastating in recent months. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack as an act of terrorism and called for greater international support. Russian authorities have claimed, without evidence, that the missile targeted a military meeting.
