The remark was made in a milk shop. Someone heard it. Someone reported her.

And two days later, the Gestapo came.

It was August 1940 in Nazi-controlled Austria, and 40-year-old Sister Angela Maria Autsch had said something dangerously simple: **“Hitler is a scourge for all Europe.”**

She wasn’t an activist or politician. She was a Trinitarian nun living quietly in Mötz, Tyrol. But under the Nazis, a private sentence could become evidence. Angela was arrested, imprisoned in Innsbruck and, without trial, shipped to Ravensbrück. Her name became a number: **4651**.

That might have been the end of her story.

Instead, prisoners began remembering her.

In March 1942, Angela was transferred to Auschwitz, where she worked in infirmaries and kitchens. Survivors later described a woman who quietly obtained food, soap, medicine and warm water for prisoners who had almost nothing. Helping them could bring punishment, yet she kept doing it.

Among the women she encountered was **Margita Schwalbová, a Slovak Jewish physician**. Nazi ideology had constructed an entire system to separate women like them—a Catholic nun and a Jewish prisoner.

They became friends.

When Schwalbová became sick, Angela reportedly shared her own meager food and cared for her. Years later, Schwalbová's testimony would help preserve the memory of the woman prisoners came to call the **“Angel of Auschwitz.”**

Angela even worked in an SS hospital. According to later accounts, she was offered a path out if she abandoned her religious congregation.

She refused.

She survived Ravensbrück. She survived years at Auschwitz. Then, on December 23, 1944, with liberation only weeks away, Angela died during an Allied air raid.

Her imprisonment had begun with no weapon, conspiracy or underground plot—only a sentence spoken aloud in a milk shop.

Perhaps the most unsettling part of Angela Autsch’s story is not what she said about Hitler, but the existence of the person standing nearby who decided six dangerous words deserved the Gestapo.

Alice-Jacqueline Luzgart | Murdered at Auschwitz, 15 April 1944
1934–1944 | France | Age 10

Alice-Jacqueline Luzgart was only 10 years old.

Born in Paris to Polish-Jewish parents, France was the only home she ever knew. After the Vel d’Hiv roundup, her parents made the heartbreaking decision to place her in the care of the OSE, praying she might survive. She was sent to the children’s home at Izieu, where she was remembered for her long braids, her joyful singing, and the innocence every child deserves.

On 6 April 1944, that innocence was stolen forever.

Klaus Barbie’s men stormed Izieu and dragged Alice away with the other children. She was imprisoned in Drancy, deported to Auschwitz on Convoy 71, and murdered in the gas chambers on 15 April 1944, just two days after arriving.

Ten years. That was the entire length of her life.

A little girl whose only crime was being born Jewish. A child who should have been laughing, learning, and dreaming of her future—not led to a gas chamber.

On this day in 1934, a Czech Jewish girl was born. On the 12 Feb 1942, she was deported to Theresienstadt with her parents and on the 28 Apr 1942 to Zamošč Ghetto which was liquidated in Nov 1942. They all perished in the Shoah. Her name was Liana Bergerová

On this day in 1883, a Czech Jewish woman was born. On the 27 Jul 1942 she was deported to Theresienstadt where she perished on the 18 Dec 1943. Out of the 1003 deported on that transport, 934 perished. Her name was Olga Schalková
