Seven years ago, I walked into a store to buy dog food.

I walked out with a best friend.

He was the quiet one. A tiny black puppy curled in the corner while the others bounced and barked. When our eyes met, there wasn’t fireworks or music. Just a quiet feeling that said, that’s him.

I didn’t know how to be a dog dad. I didn’t know what leash to buy or which treats were “right.” I just knew he was coming home with me.

I placed him in the cart that day, and he curled up like he had always belonged there.

Like he had always belonged with me.

Seven years later, he’s no longer that tiny ball of fur. He’s bigger, stronger, grayer around the muzzle. But he’s still my shadow. Still walking beside me through grocery aisles and through life.

Between those two photos lives everything.

Long walks.
Muddy paws.
Vet scares that left me shaken.
Late nights when he rested his head on my knee and somehow made everything feel survivable.

People say, “It’s just a dog.”

But he was there when I felt lost.
He was there when life felt heavy.
He celebrated small wins like they were championships.

He didn’t just grow up.

So did I.

Sometimes I still put him in that cart, just for a moment. Not because he needs it.

But because it reminds me where we started.

I went in for dog food.

I found family.
