Is "Uptober" back on the cards?

September's gloom is lifting. Weaker US jobs and inflation data have cooled fears of another Fed rate hike, the SEC has proposed a new crypto custody rule, and Citi has raised its 12-month Bitcoin target to $113,000. But a rally is far from guaranteed. September's US inflation figures land on 14 October and could shift the mood quickly. Bank forecasts have also swung widely this year. Here's what to watch this month.

Buying the dip means purchasing crypto after a price drop, hoping to lower your average cost before it recovers.

Timing the exact bottom is close to impossible, and a falling price doesn't always mean a bargain. Sometimes it means something's actually wrong.

Why September Matters for Crypto

August was a good month for crypto. September could shake things up, with four major central banks all making rate decisions within three weeks of each other.

September 10: European Central Bank

The ECB has been cutting or holding rates all year, but that could change. Inflation in the eurozone is creeping up (2.9% in July, driven by energy costs from the Middle East conflict), and markets now think a rate hike is more likely than not.
Why it matters: this would be the first major central bank to turn tighter this year, and tighter policy usually pulls money out of risk assets like crypto. A hold would likely be the better outcome for crypto.

September 15–16: US Federal Reserve

The big one. This is Kevin Warsh's third meeting as Fed Chair, and the first where he's giving less guidance than usual, so what he says matters more than what he's said before. Rates have been steady all year, and it's close to a coin toss between another hold and a hike.

Why it matters: the Fed has the biggest influence on global money flows, so this is the decision crypto watches closest. A hold with calm language could be good for crypto. A hike, or any hint of more hikes coming, probably isn't.

September 17: Bank of England

UK rates are already high, and inflation ticked up to 2.9% in July. The bank is expected to hold steady, but the vote was close last time and could get closer.

Why it matters: the UK doesn't move global markets the way the US does, but if the Bank of England leans hawkish too, it adds to the sense that central banks everywhere are turning tighter at once, and that mood drags on crypto.

September 29: Reserve Bank of Australia

After three hikes earlier in the year, the RBA has now held steady twice. It doesn't expect inflation back to target until late 2027, and headline inflation is still running at 3.6%.

Why it matters: a hold is expected, so it's really about tone. If the RBA hints more hikes could be coming, that's bad for local risk appetite. Softer language could be a mild positive.

The bigger picture

Four rate decisions, inflation still above target in most of the world, oil near US$94 a barrel, and a Fed chair who's deliberately telling markets less than usual. Add a quarterly crypto derivatives expiry on 25 September, and September is shaping up to be a volatile month rather than a clear-direction one.

What is Staking?

Staking lets you lock up certain cryptocurrencies to help secure the blockchain network they run on, and earn rewards for doing it. Think of it like a savings account, except instead of a bank, you're helping a blockchain network verify transactions.

It's not without risk. Lock-up periods, slashing, and price swings can all eat into returns, and "guaranteed" high yields are usually a red flag.

Bull market. Bear market. Same asset, completely different mood.

A bull market means rising prices and growing confidence. A bear market means falling prices and more caution. Neither seems to last forever, and both come with real risk.

Some investors see a bear market as a buying opportunity while others use downturns to average into positions steadily rather than trying to time the bottom.

Others sit it out entirely. There's no single right answer, only the one that fits your own risk appetite.

Why August Matters for Crypto

No Fed, ECB or Bank of England meeting all month, but four events could still move the market.

Aug 10-11: Australia's Reserve Bank Meets

Australia's central bank meets to decide interest rates. Rates are at 4.35% after three rises this year. Most economists expect a hold, though a minority are tipping another rise. If the Bank signals it's done raising rates, that's usually taken well by risk assets like crypto. If it hints at another rise, expect a bit of a wobble.

Aug 12: US Inflation Data

This is the big one. US prices rose 3.5% over the past year, down from 4.2% the month before. Inflation is cooling, but it's still well above the Fed's 2% target. Right now markets see almost no chance of a rate cut this year. Futures are actually leaning slightly toward another rise by December. A faster cooldown would shift that conversation, and rate expectations have historically been one of the bigger macro drivers for Bitcoin. When cash in the bank pays less, investors tend to look further afield for returns. No guarantees though.

Aug 19: UK Inflation Data

UK prices rose 2.6% over the past year, edging closer to the Bank of England's 2% target. The Bank held rates at 3.75% in July, and markets are split on whether September brings another rise. A softer number here takes some of that pressure off, which has historically coincided with a better backdrop for crypto and other risk assets.

Aug 27-29: Jackson Hole Symposium

Central bankers from around the world meet in Wyoming. This year's theme is financial innovation and what it means for payments and policy, so it's more relevant to crypto than usual. With no Fed or ECB meeting this month, it's also where policymakers tend to give their clearest hints about what's coming next. Any comment on future rate moves can shift markets fast, crypto included.
It's a quieter month for scheduled central bank meetings, but between Australia, the US, the UK and Jackson Hole, there's still plenty that could move the market.

Corporate treasuries are starting to look a lot less conservative. A recent Deloitte survey found that 23% of CFOs expect their treasury departments to use crypto for investments or payments within the next two years, and that number jumps to nearly 40% at companies earning over $10 billion a year.

Stablecoins for faster cross-border payments, DeFi for treasury yield, even crypto payments to vendors: the use cases are getting practical, not just experimental.

Bitcoin doesn't.

Millennials are set to inherit trillions from older generations. But many may choose to sell traditional assets like real estate and buy Bitcoin instead.

As trillions transfer across generations, digital assets appeal for their liquidity and borderless nature, while property might be seen as expensive to maintain and not portable.

Why June Matters for Crypto

May was one of the busiest macro months in recent memory. June picks up right where it left off.

June 11: ECB Rate Decision

The European Central Bank finally steps back into the frame. After holding in April and skipping May entirely, the ECB meets on June 11 with markets pricing in a real chance of a hike. Eurozone inflation has been running hotter than expected, partly driven by energy costs tied to the Middle East conflict. A hike from the ECB would reinforce a global tightening narrative, historically a headwind for crypto. If they hold, relief could be short-lived if their forward guidance signals more to come.

June 16: RBA Rate Decision

After three consecutive hikes in 2026, the RBA has signalled it now has room to pause and monitor how the economy absorbs the tightening so far. The cash rate sits at 4.35%, the highest in years. A hold would give households some breathing room and could provide a modest lift to risk sentiment. But with inflation still above target and the Middle East conflict continuing to push fuel prices higher, the door to further hikes hasn't closed. Markets will be watching closely for any shift in language from the Board.

June 16-17: Fed Meeting: Warsh's First as Chair

This is the big one. Kevin Warsh chairs his first FOMC meeting after being confirmed by the Senate on May 13 in the most divisive vote in Fed history. Warsh has called for "regime change" at the Fed and has publicly argued rates can be lower over time. But, he's inheriting an environment of sticky inflation and rising energy costs.

Markets are pricing near-certainty that rates hold at 3.50-3.75%. Every word of his post-meeting press conference will be parsed for signals on what the new era of Fed leadership actually means in practice.

Any surprise could ripple across crypto fast.

The Bigger Picture: Three major central bank decisions in one month, all against a backdrop of elevated inflation, Middle East uncertainty, and a brand-new Fed chair finding his footing. June has the ingredients for significant volatility.

Sell in May and go away. This week's Onchain newsletter has a lot to say about that.

The US Clarity Act cleared a Senate panel. Crypto finally gets its regulatory framework, packaged with KYC, AML, and surveillance requirements.

Thorchain lost over $10M to an exploit. A patch was written. It failed in testing. The vulnerability stayed live.

The Ethereum Foundation lost two more researchers. All three protocol leads have already left this year.

And this is the last Onchain from Naomi. Thank you, Naomi. It has been a pleasure.

Who actually invented Bitcoin? There seem to be some new contenders.

Over 15 years since Bitcoin changed the world, and we still have no idea who actually created it. Satoshi Nakamoto walked away from the internet in 2010 and has never been heard from since. The Bitcoin whitepaper, the genesis block, the entire foundation of modern crypto, all the work of a ghost. We take a look at the leading suspects and the clues that have kept the world guessing..

Crypto's new move: skip the exploit, hire a lawyer.

This week a dodgy law firm tried to hand frozen Lazarus Group funds to its own clients, Justin Sun sued the Trump crypto project and got a defamation countersuit in return, and crypto officially became the most muted topic on X, beating out politics.

When going to a wedding, maybe do not mention working in crypto.

Why May Matters for Crypto

April was one of the most eventful months in recent memory for macro markets, and May arrives with the dust still settling. The picture hasn't gotten simpler.

May 5: RBA Rate Decision

At its March meeting, the RBA raised the cash rate, the second increase of 2026. The central bank cited inflation, tighter labour market conditions, and the energy price shock from the Middle East. This comes with a probability of another hike at the May 5 meeting.

If the RBA raises rates again, Australians will have less money to spend and crypto is often one of the first things people cut back on. Higher rates also tend to make investors more cautious overall, which can push prices down. If the RBA doesn't hike, that's generally better news for crypto in the short term.

May 5–7: Consensus Miami

The "Super Bowl of Blockchain" returns to the US, this time in Miami. The event serves as a key forum for the convergence of crypto at scale, institutional integration, and agentic commerce. Digital assets are no longer nascent; institutions are moving money on crypto rails, AI agents are engaging in live markets, and stablecoins are tying them all together. With 500+ speakers including policymakers and major institutional players, expect Consensus to set the narrative for the second half of the year.

May 12: US Inflation Data (CPI)

On May 12, the US releases its latest inflation figures. Right now inflation is still running high, with rising fuel costs from the Middle East conflict making things worse. If inflation comes in higher than expected, it makes it less likely the US will cut interest rates anytime soon. That tends to drag crypto prices down. If inflation is lower than expected, it could give crypto a short-term boost.

May 15: Jerome Powell's Term Ends

Jerome Powell's term as Fed chair officially ends on May 15, with Kevin Warsh nominated by President Trump to replace him. Warsh has suggested that over time lower interest rates make sense. A smooth transition is largely priced in, any disruption to that assumption could create short-term volatility across risk assets including crypto.

ECB: No Meeting in May But the Pressure Is Building

There is no ECB rate decision in May (the next falls on June 11), but ECB policymakers have acknowledged that the war in the Middle East has made the outlook significantly more uncertain. May's data releases across Europe will shape the June outcome. A more hawkish tilt ahead of June would be a headwind for crypto sentiment.
