When some Nigerians talk about confidence, they often do so with a subtle reference to self-esteem.
Confidence = belief in your ability (self-efficacy, agency)
Self-esteem = perception of self-worth (this drives confidence).
If you read “self-esteem and social media” research papers, you’ll learn that social comparison and environment are two huge self-esteem moderators.
Social comparison is a strong proximal mechanism, while environment is a broader structural moderator.

@taadelodun’s self-esteem is secure/stable and internal while the car-guy has a fragile and socially contingent self-esteem.
One of the things I love about doing a Social (Behavioral) Science PhD is that it helps me understand how humans behave and the WHY behind it.
And when I see it play out in the real world, I just smile and say to myself, “I know why this one is behaving this way and I also know the solution (treatment).”
