I’ve seen the concerns being raised about my past interactions with the Israeli Embassy, and I want to address them directly.

Yes, I went on a trip to Israel in 2022 upon the invitation of Israel’s Ministry of Tourism. To put some context to this trip, this was in July 2022, more than a year before the current war in Gaza began. I was in the middle of ideating for my travel documentary program, Woman In Action, and just as other networks had done features on the Holy Land in the past, I thought there could be a story there.

While the itinerary and venues were arranged by our hosts, there were no restrictions on whom we could speak to, what questions we could ask, or what we could observe and say about the experience. We were not asked to produce any particular narrative or portray Israel in any prescribed way. I went there with an open mind, yet also very much aware that since this was a trip sponsored by their government, what we were NOT shown was as important as what we were shown.

I came away with a better appreciation of the complexity of Israel and Palestine’s history and realities, and knew that any story about them had to be handled with a much more sensitive lens. I decided not to pursue an episode under Woman In Action at the time, thinking that perhaps later I could give the story the treatment it deserved.

What they asked of me in exchange for that travel was to attend a travel expo of theirs, and this was before the war. Also, for full context, in May 2023, before the current war, I accepted a professional engagement to host an Israeli Embassy event, just as I have with other embassies. I also interacted cordially with then-Ambassador Ilan Fluss, including an encounter at UP that has resurfaced online.

When war erupted in October of 2023, and I later had the chance to interview Ambassador Fluss on my news-interview program, Morning Matters, in 2025, I took the opportunity to confront him on several issues – the human rights violations in Gaza, the right of Palestinians to exist, and why Israel was not a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty while Iran was.
My interactions with the Embassy never determined my editorial positions, nor did they prevent me from questioning an Israeli official critically.

At the same time, I understand the criticism and why, taken together and viewed in light of everything that has happened since, these interactions are being scrutinized.

I take questions about journalistic independence seriously. Looking back, I recognize more clearly the importance of maintaining not only editorial independence, but sufficient distance to avoid reasonable perceptions of conflict. There are choices I would approach with greater circumspection today.

To be clear: I do not support genocide or the dehumanization of any people. I believe in the dignity and right to life of Palestinians and Israelis alike.

Journalism requires us to encounter people, institutions and perspectives we may eventually have to scrutinize. It also requires us to continually examine our own boundaries and judgment.

I am listening to the legitimate concerns being raised, and I will carry what I learn from this into the standards I set for my work moving forward.
