The unofficial motto of NATO: Keep the Russians out, the Americans in and the Germans down.

3 types of countries in NATO:
1️⃣The US.
2️⃣Countries who benefits from being in NATO (blue)
3️⃣Countries that sees no benefits (red).

For the blue countries, if they do not want to seek friendly relations with Russia, and live to antagonize it to appease the US, then NATO is very useful at providing defense and weapon systems.

However, for the red countries, even if they have poor relations with Russia, they still won't face any threats of invasion.

So what's point of the countries in red being in NATO? If they leave tomorrow, will Russian tanks roll into their capitals? Of course not. The Soviet Union is long gone.

The sole purpose of NATO is for the US to control Europe. It's a dog leash masquerading as an alliance.
