Georgian authorities’ use of increasingly repressive laws and politically motivated criminal investigations is decimating independent civil society and silencing critical voices.

Thank you @geomel_ge for this article, recalling the longstanding 🇩🇪 - 🇬🇪 partnership & friendship. I too believe it will outlast the invented narrative that 🇩🇪 or 🇪🇺 are somehow hostile to 🇬🇪, as well as the "manufactured fury" against 🇩🇪/🇪🇺 diplomats.

Deeply grateful to @liberalinternat for the trust and the unique opportunity to serve as their speaker on Georgia at the UN Human Rights Council. Thank you for this immense privilege!
Oral Statement by Liberal International👇🏻
“Mr. President,
Georgia’s human rights situation in 2026 is nothing short of a catastrophe, especially considering its speed of decline in the last 18 months, and now having more political prisoners per capita than Russia.
It is the direct consequence of unaddressed state violence against peaceful protesters and efforts to stifle dissent with extensive, often unjustifiable, draconian legislation, as well as financial suffocation of opponents.
The past months have uncovered credible allegations of the use of prohibited chemical substances against peaceful protesters, and the March 2026 OSCE Moscow Mechanism report spoke of near-total impunity for crimes frequently crossing the threshold of torture.
Widespread unlawful and inhuman practices, such as stripping detainees naked or jailing people for merely protesting on a sidewalk, have marred this year in Georgia. A new bill will soon control social media and prosecute online dissent.
As Liberal International reiterates its 2025 recommendations; it also notes that a collective political effort must be deployed by the UN to ensure compliance by the ruling power in Georgia.
Thank you very much.”

A Georgian doctor who treated children. Today, a judge put him in handcuffs inside the courtroom. This is what passes for justice in Georgia in 2026. 🧵 [1/10]
🇬🇪🇺🇸 Rubio just confirmed it on the record. The "improved relations" GD is selling is not a reset. It is a list of conditions Washington handed Georgian Dream to change its behavior.
The Secretary of State affirmed Wilson's charge. Iran facilitation, sanctions evasion, a rigged election.
No wonder @tv_imedi and @GeorgianDream41 is silent.
The latest lunacy from Moscow: the MVD has issued an arrest warrant for Ben Wallace, the former British defence minister (the charge isn't specified). I'm sure he'll be cancelling that beach holiday in Sochi now...
As the Hungarian example confirms, and the Polish one before that, the key to large turnout in actual practice is prior long-term, grass-roots organizational labor that helps people to understand how their single vote is a dignified part of a larger transformation.
At the age of 93, in the 49th year of his enthronement upon the Patriarchal Throne, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Archbishop of Mtskheta-Tbilisi, and Metropolitan of Bichvinta and Tskhum-Abkhazia, has fallen asleep in the Lord.
The Patriarchal Throne is widowed.
From this day, until the election of a new Primate, the Georgian Apostolic Autocephalous Orthodox Church shall be governed by the Locum Tenens of the Patriarchal Throne, Metropolitan Shio Mujiri.
Ilia II was the 141st First Hierarch of the Georgian Church.

🇬🇪Georgian Dream is Europe’s most un-democratic and human rights-violating force currently in power.
Today, they announced new amendments to the "Law on Grants" that criminalize receiving foreign support, restrict political participation, and outlaw core democratic activity

My mandate led or joined 8 communications to @GeorgiaGeneva since its last UPR review in 2021, none of which received a response. I also travelled to #Georgia on an official country visit in Oct-Nov 2023, & presented my report to the @UN_HRC in March 2024. (1/12)

Grandma Nino still protests, on Day 377 of #GeorgiaProtests
Our elderly generation not living to see a free Georgia after all they’ve been through is one of my biggest fears and regrets.
Georgian government uses toxic WW1 chemical agent to disperse protesters. Effects last for weeks after exposure. A new level of depravity. Only question is whether they came up with it on their own or it was passed to them by their Russian handlers https://t.co/2M7du29F8n
Georgian Dream regime has brought new charges against political leaders in the so-called sabotage case. Charges were brought against Mikheil Saakashvili, Giorgi Vashadze, Nika Gvaramia, Nika Melia, Zurab Japaridze, Elene Khoshtaria, Mamuka Khazaradze and Badri Japaridze.
🧵“Sanctions Bubble”-How 🇬🇪 Became Russia’s Safe Haven for Sanctions Evasion 🇬🇪💰🇷🇺 The war in Ukraine reshaped global trade flows, but in Georgia, it created a bubble of profit around sanctions evasion, empowering oligarch and capturing the state. [1/12]

This is Ms. Aza from #Gagra - the woman who secretly buried those executed in #Abkhazia, risking her own life.
Now, GD regime police fined her for a “violation.”
I can’t imagine a more painful scene.
What did this heroic woman do wrong?
Wore an “illegal” face mask somewhere?
