The “LOL Jets” narrative is mostly a recent invention for casual fans and non-ball knowers. That said, the Jets have been incredibly bad recently. Fifteen years is a long time to go without the playoffs. But ownership matters. This is not a historically bad nor irrelevant NFL franchise. Just look at the response to Stan Kroenke’s purchase of the Angels. One good owner can turn a franchise around very quickly.

And speaking of the franchise, Joe Namath became pro football’s first 4,000-yard passer in 1967. 1967. Then the Jets beating the Colts in Super Bowl III helped legitimize the AFL and shape the NFL we watch today.

From 1997 to 2010, the Jets were routinely competitive. They made the playoffs in 1998, 2001, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2009 and 2010. An AFC Championship Game under Parcells. Back-to-back AFC Championship Games under Rex Ryan. In their last home playoff game, they beat two-time Super Bowl champion Peyton Manning and the Colts 41 to 0.
