Tesla’s operating cash flow reached a new all time high, a development that should ultimately support a higher share price. Years ago, I coined this dynamic the “Amazon scenario,” named after the tech company that pioneered it. Jeff Bezos famously reinvested nearly everything Amazon generated, and his successor has largely continued that tradition. Despite minimal capital returns, Amazon’s share price continued to appreciate because investors were willing to pay for an increasingly large, strategically valuable platform and the future monetisation opportunities it created.

Elon @elonmusk is pursuing a similar strategy at Tesla. The company has moved away from its former emphasis on consistently generating positive free cash flow and is instead redeploying its operating cash flow into expanding its manufacturing footprint, artificial intelligence infrastructure, autonomy, robotics, energy and other long term opportunities.

The logic is straightforward: as Tesla’s platform, cash generation and addressable opportunity expand, so does the value investors may assign to the business. The perpetually dangling carrot is the same one that supported Amazon for decades: what could this company earn if management eventually slowed reinvestment and fully monetised the platform it has built?

This is the Amazon scenario and I predicted years ago that ALL tech companies will turn into Amazons. So far, I have been proven correct with one glaring exception: Apple.
