Curious. When @jack gave @HumanityForward 5 million and he said he wanted it to go towards #UBI experimentation. Almost instantly @AndrewYang says they are doing micro-grants. Why? Why not pick 40 people and give them 1k/month for 10 years? Do the experiment!!
If you find out about a nation-threatening pandemic and your first move is to adjust your stock portfolio you should probably not be in a job that serves the public interest.
Putting money into people’s hands is the obvious thing to do in this situation. I hope Congress wakes up to this before it’s too late. Every day is enormous at this point.
Markets down 10%. No one thinks that what Congress is doing is sufficient to prevent a deep recession or worse. Congress needs to think much bigger about what is happening here. This is an economic blackout for an extended period of time on a society-wide scale. Wider than 2008.
The problem is not today (though today is not great). It’s 2 weeks from now. 4 weeks from now. 8 weeks from now. 12 weeks from now. Think about the situations millions of families on the financial precipice will be in at each point in time unless something big is done.
Update: I’m told that In the last 24 hours, @AndrewYang’s new venture has raise $2.9 million.
$2 million of that is planned to go to people as part of UBI project.
I’m disappointed not to be going to @sxsw with @karaswisher@benyt - but my disappointment is nothing compared to the economic harm and lost opportunities to everyone who was counting on SXSW for wages, tips, business and publicity. It’s devastating for tens of thousands.
