Good night from Buescher State Park near Smithville, Texas. Buescher State Park is a 1,016.7-acre Texas state park located just north of Smithville in Bastrop County, about 45 miles east of Austin (a short drive past its larger sibling, Bastrop State Park). It sits in the Post Oak Savannah ecoregion and forms part of the unique “Lost Pines” ecosystem—an isolated stand of loblolly pines that are the westernmost in the United States, genetically adapted to lower rainfall than their East Texas relatives.

The land was part of Stephen F. Austin’s colonial grant. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC Companies 1805 and 1811) built many of the park’s facilities in the 1930s using native stone, including the lake and dam, group hall, pavilion, trails, and other structures that still stand. A scenic Park Road 1C (about 12 miles) connects Buescher with Bastrop State Park through the Lost Pines and is popular with drivers and cyclists.
