TLDR - Looking at a combination of game health metrics combined with player feedback we've decided to roll back the party restrictions for Master and Legend tier players.
Last week we rolled out a queue restriction for Masters and Legend players in an effort to reduce the "shark tank effect" - or top teams steamrolling through lobbies. The idea behind this change was to make queue times better and improve match quality at high MMR.
As we rolled out the restriction we watched several different game health metrics for the top 3% of games by MMR:
MMR Differentials
- This is the measure of "how big is the range of MMR of players in this game".
- The quality of matches hasn't meaningfully improved for top tier games.
Stompiness
- Here we look at the team that stomped the most in a lobby and how many kills they got.
- The average before and after the change was still roughly around 20 kills.
- Fun fact that high MMR games have way more kills than low MMR games, high MMR players are much better at killing, escaping, and reviving which drive kill counts 30-40% higher than all other MMRs.
Distribution of Eliminations
- How many different teams eliminated at least one other team?
- Our hope with this change here was that less of the team eliminations would go to the top team, but this stayed the same.
Queue Times
While this did improve, it wasn't on a magnitude that's really meaningful.
So what now?
Remove Queue Restrictions
- SUPERVIVE is intended to be a game that you play with your squad - and given we're not seeing the competitive / match quality benefits of this change - we'd rather be quick and change back given the feedback we've seen.
- We're going to rollback the restriction for Masters and Legends and let people fully premade with their friends. This change will go live in TC regions on 12/4 at 9am PDT.
- Note: one change we will make with this is to tighten up matchmaking at the top-end. This will mean if you’re in the top 1% of players and queue as a 4 stack, you’ll be subject to longer queue times than before.
- Note2: We will also be leaving the Legend+ Custom Game access until January 15th (updating every Monday) because if you’re literally the #1 through #4 ranked player in SUPERVIVE, you will absolutely be better off self-organizing games than queueing for a well-balanced lobby.
Upcoming Ranked Changes - Season 0
- We're working on a series of other changes for Ranked for Season 0, arriving on January 15th, those changes are aimed at:
- Reduce Overall RP in the System
- Dynamically Adjusting Antes based on your rank and your opponents
- Regional Leaderboards
- Ranked Rewards
- Other potential changes to improve matchmaking quality
Thanks for helping us test these restrictions at high MMR. We're an experimental studio and so we're willing to try things, but we're also quick to pull something back if it's not working for you. Ranked and the competitive experience are really important to us as competitive gamers ourselves - so expect to see us continue to iterate and improve
