Our hearts are shattered.

Emerging from the holy fast of Yom Kippur, British Jews are now grasping the full extent of today’s terror attack at the Heaton Park Synagogue in Manchester.

This is the day we hoped we would never see, but which deep down, we knew would come.

For so long we have witnessed an unrelenting wave of Jew hatred on our streets, on campuses, on social media and elsewhere – this is the tragic result.

This not only an assault on the Jewish community, but an attack on the very foundations of humanity and the values of compassion, dignity and respect which we all share.

I have spoken this evening to Rabbi Daniel Walker, the spiritual leader of the Heaton Park Synagogue. His courageous leadership, together with the resilience of his congregation, are an inspiration to us all.

May the victims’ memories be for a blessing and may the injured be granted a swift recovery.

I pray that this tragedy strengthens our collective resolve to confront antisemitism, in all its guises, once and for all.

@jeremy_gans In crime in particular there is an astonishing amount of old CLR/ NSWLR cases that are not freely available online. I assume it’s also a security issue to sent court staff down hyperlinks? One can, using some file/word magic, hyperlink into the authorities bundle, but not perfect

@jeremy_gans Authorities bundles are really just the non-digital analogue of this, and presumably stop a lot of this occurring in hearings where they are used by the parties or required by the Court. They are more common for final hearings than interlocutory matters, I gather.

@jeremy_gans @DominicVillaSC I’ve always thought that ‘offend’ fits oddly in a list with ‘intimidate’ or ‘humiliate’. Reasonable people can be (and are) offended by an enormous variety of conduct which goes nowhere near intimidation or humiliation. Whether that suggests a narrow or broad reading is arguable.

The answer, though, is that whilst informing *may* be against the mental health interests of the client of a psychiatrist, it is almost always going to be against the legal interests of a client of a barrister. It’s simply a difference in degree.

@jeremy_gans @BarristerBaum I think it is sensible that if you engage someone for a particular purpose, anything they do which is directly against that purpose is particularly bad, as opposed to against your interests generally. It's not the end of debate; just another factor to consider. (2/2)

Anything a psychiatrist does against the mental health interests of their client is particularly egregious, because they are sought out for the purpose of improving mental health. (1/2)

Your *lawyer* informing, and therefore placing you and your associates in greater legal ‘danger’ is more akin to your doctor stabbing you, or your accountant stealing your money etc. It’s a fundamental breach of their specific purpose.
