Adekunle Gold is 39 🇳🇬

His stage name came from a church sermon. The preacher said "you can't substitute brass for gold" and he took it.

He auditioned for MTN Project Fame twice and was told he wasn't good enough

He first heard One Direction's "Story of My Life" in traffic in his green Honda, recorded the melody on his phone, and that became "Sade"

After "Sade" blew, he used to DM fans, check on them, and even drop his phone number so people could call him

First time he left Nigeria was 2015, on the back of "Sade" and "Orente." He later said he'd been to 35+ countries.

Manchester United and Adidas used him as a face of their LFSTLR fashion collection. He is a proper United fan.

After YBNL he named his live band The 79th Element (gold's atomic number)

Besides graphics, he studied textiles for two years and also sculpts and paints, like his dad

He once tried to hide in a keke (tricycle) with cap, hoodie and glasses. Three girls still jumped out screaming his name.

What he misses about normal life is hopping on a bike in traffic and buying roasted plantain by the roadside.

Dated musician Simi for years before a small private wedding in Lagos in January 2019. They still sing and make music together ❤️

An auntie taught him and his sisters choir harmonies while his grandma taught them Yoruba folk songs. That's his first music school

Grew up in a Muslim home. His dad still let them go to church, which is where the choir years happened

He sang in church choir for years wanting a solo that never came. The rejection became fuel.

Adekunle Gold used insecurity as homework. (started working out (now almost addicted) and finally quit biting his nails

The AG Baby look began when he looked in the mirror, left his hair rough on purpose, and stopped buttoning his shirts all the way

He has sickle cell. At 20, during a crisis, he lay in bed and begged God to take his life. He later said the disease stole his childhood (no playing in the rain) but also built his discipline.
It inspired his foundation 🫂

He got fired in 2014 during a company restructure. That push, plus "Sade" is what finally made him go all-in on music.

Also lost his youngest sister in 2011. He has said she was like his feminine version and that day his world crumbled. May she continue to rest in peace 🕊️

He has said he can fail as a musician, but he cannot fail as a father and husband. He wants his children to have a life far better than the one he grew up in.

AG baby is now a proud father of 2 kids. (Girl and boy)

What a ride it has been for Adekunle Gold.

Faced so many rejections and had to endure multiple restrictions.

I even saw a recent tweet where he said in 2014 that he would worth around 250 million naira in the next 20 years. But today he couldn't believe how well he has blown past that 2014 dream, with over a decade more to go.

For you reading this today, I want to tell you to always put yourself out there no matter how small.

Adekunle Gold learnt Graphic designing. He also learnt textile.
He still built his singing skills by the side. This means he had multiple value points. And when his breakthrough came, it was graphics designing that initiated the process of who we know today as Adekunle Gold.

That's what happens when you put yourself out there and have multiple value to give. It increases your surface area for opportunities.

Who knows what can come from it

Anything can happen.

But we first have to be visible for it to happen.

I'm sorry we never got a chance to meet, but getting this note from Dolly really had a an impact on me. She definitely didn't have to take the time to do it. Even for a kid who mostly listened to rap music, she was an icon. A superstar in every sense. Rest easy Dolly. And thank you for the kind words.

He was 22 years old when he started acting in 1981

His family had an extraordinary twin history. His father and grandfather were both twins, and his mother reportedly gave birth to four sets of twins.

He once said he was the only surviving child from those four sets of twins (seven siblings lost)

He lost his father at a young age (around 11) and his mother later (around 2000). He dedicated at least one film to her

Ogogo attended Christ Church School in Ilaro for primary education

Started secondary school at Gazikia College in Lagos but could not finish due to financial problems.

Trained as an automobile mechanic at a technical college

He worked as an auto mechanic at the Lagos State Water Corporation for about 13 years while acting part-time

Resigned from his government job in 1994 to act full-time after already producing a few films.

Ogogo's first self-produced movie was The Wicked Boy (shot in two parts in 1993) He spent over ₦70,000 on it when many films cost far less

One of his early paid roles earned him ₦1,200 in 1991 for Omo Yoruba (big money at the time)

His breakthrough came with the role of Wole Owolabi in Owo Blow (directed by Tade Ogidan), which won him Best Actor of the Year at the 1997 THEMA Awards.

He appeared in over 300 films over a career spanning roughly 45 years.

In Kunle Afolayan's 2022 Netflix film Aníkúlápó, he played Alaafin Ademuyiwa and earned a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the 2023 AMVCAs. He reprised the role in the 2024 sequel

He is a devout Muslim (often addressed as Alhaji) and was selective about roles to help preserve Yoruba culture.

Also ventured into real estate with a company/project called Ogogo Royal Estate (or Ogogo Estate), which he described as a long-nurtured dream

He received international recognition, including an award presented at the House of Parliament in Canada.

Ogogo survived a severe ulcer battle (reportedly lasting years, with periods when he could not eat solid food for months and only managed pap)

He once produced a film while seriously ill because he feared he might die and wanted to leave something for his children

He was part of the "Odunfa Caucus" collective with friends like Yinka Quadri to support one another's film work

He (Taiwo Hassan (Ogogo) passed away on August 23, 2026, at age 66 after battling stage-four cancer and was buried the next day (today 24th) in his hometown of Ilaro according to Muslim tradition

Let me tell you something today

Ogogo lost his parents and he lost 7 siblings.

That's over 9 family deaths that he has lived with all his life.

But he didn't let that hold him back.

He knew his reality. And he knew his dreams.

He wanted to act films. But he didn't have money. Heck he couldn't even complete his secondary school education.

So he learnt mechanic work for cars. He got good at it and was employed by Lagos State.

He did all these and not for once did his dreams die. He made sure his interest in acting was still very alive.

Then he funded his film. Spent 70,000 naira on it at that time.

This is what structure looks like. He did a job and mastered the skill. Then the money from the mechanic employment started his filming career. And that movie career gave him global recognition.
