@malenkion And the SATA on an m.2 SSD (the gum stick shaped ones) isn’t the same connector as the SATA on a 2.5 inch SSD or HDD. I think it was the last thing I had to say. Hope it helps.

@malenkion Also one last thing if you buy an SSD and a compatible enclosure (shell), make sure both are either NVMe or SATA because even if they look the same an m.2 SSD can be SATA OR NVMe but they’re not compatible between them (you can’t plug an NVMe SSD in a SATA shell and vice versa)

@malenkion Also of course it’s easier to directly buy a premade one but I’m scarred for life after buying one from Amazon and it just died right after copying my data to it. The drive was new and it was the usb interface that died. Had I built it myself I’d still have my data.

@malenkion You can buy a SATA (HDD or SSD) or NVMe (SSD only) enclosure you just have to purchase the one matching the drive you chose.

@malenkion Yeah they’re shells you just open them, plug the HDD or SSD inside close the shell and plug the usb cable

@malenkion Also I'd advise to put whatever drive you choose in a dedicated enclosure rather than buying a prebuilt drive. It will save your data if the drive "dies" while the drive itself isn't dead because data recovery is way harder on a dead usb interface. It's also marginally cheaper.
