People like her don’t take on these cases because they’re guided by some profound belief in the sanctity of life or a moral objection to capital punishment. They operate from a worldview in which they see themselves as dissidents standing against a corrupt and oppressive system.

In her head, the state is always the villain and the criminal is always the victim of institutional overreach even if the person on death row is genuinely guilty of horrific crimes. That is secondary to the larger and more important narrative in her head, which is to enact the marvel movie trope of being a dissident against an oppressive establishment.

People like this will argue the streets are not safe for women to walk in at night and simultaneously refuse to accept that society has an obligation to the innocent people who have to live in it.
