Soil is one of Earth’s largest carbon stores.

A 12-year field experiment found that warming does not affect soil carbon the same way under all conditions. The strongest losses happened under drought, while wetter conditions changed the outcome significantly.

Researchers found that under dry conditions, warming accelerated microbial activity in ways that increased the breakdown of stored carbon. This suggests that rainfall plays a major role in determining whether warming leads to greater soil carbon loss.

If we want to understand how climate change affects soil, we cannot look at temperature alone. Water conditions matter too.

A new study shows that nutrients and particles carried by air currents from Africa can reach the Amazon, where highly weathered forest soil depends on external nutrient inputs.

Researchers found that rainfall, not only wind direction, plays a major role in determining how much of this material reaches the forest. As climate patterns shift, understanding these atmospheric connections becomes important for predicting changes in forest health and carbon balance.

Excess salt in soil is a serious challenge for agriculture.

FAO has warned that salt-affected soil can reduce fertility, water quality, and biodiversity while making it harder to grow food. The issue is especially important in dry regions and areas affected by poor irrigation, seawater intrusion, or climate change.

The good news is that better management can help. Organic matter, improved irrigation, crop rotation, bioinoculants, phytoremediation, and salt-resistant crops can all support recovery where appropriate.
