Happy to announce that our story on the #APL´s role in normalising Kenyon Cell dendritic responses in microglomeruli of the Mushroom Body calyx is now out in #eLife@GTavosanis @FialaLab

Proud to present our new preprint on the #APL neuron’s contribution in supporting sparse stimuli representations via feed-forward, localised inhibition in microglomeruli of the #Drosophila mushroom body #calyx.

This is striking because the microglomeruli are complex structures formed by multiple (eg 16) neurons, suggesting local coordination. Thus, the circuit in the calyx reorganizes to accomodate important information.

We found that the number of functional microglomeruli formed by those projection neurons increases after consolidation of the associative memory, demonstrating that a complex and input-specific rewiring in the calyx accompanies memory consolidation.
Imaging neural activity in flies for a few days is now possible! ...also automated! We used robots to assist surgery and to feed the fly during the experiment. Here is how the fly is fed while navigating in virtual reality: (1/3) #neuroscience#VR#Robots
