One year ago, in the op-ed below, I warned this would keep happening and laid out exactly how to make Canada pay: State Department arbitration under the 1991 U.S.-Canada Air Quality Agreement (Trail Smelter, 1941: the polluter pays) and a USMCA dispute with trade remedies until Ottawa manages its forests. This is negligence, not an act of God.

I also implored our current leaders to act then, not wait for the next election. One year later: nothing. @dananessel launched a climate lawsuit against American oil companies, but won't send Canada a bill for the smoke filling Michigan lungs today.

President Trump and @USTradeRep have the leverage to move this tomorrow. Michigan should be first in line. @GovWhitmer and Nessel could formally request arbitration this week. If they won't defend Michigan's air, they should tell us why.

The tools exist. The smoke is here. The silence is a choice.

Let's make Michigan safe, normal, and responsible again! 🇺🇸
