6th Gift of Research: Discovery 🔍
Discovery in research means uncovering new knowledge that changes lives and shapes the future of care.
Professor Terry Jones, Director of Clinical Research at LUHFT, says: "Co-leading PATHOS over the last 12 years has been a life-changing experience. Not only have I had the privilege to influence global clinical practice, but I’ve met incredible colleagues worldwide who I now count as friends.
"Most importantly, I’ve been humbled by patients who join trials knowing they may not benefit personally -that level of altruism is truly awe-inspiring."
PATHOS is the largest head and neck cancer trial yet completed, spanning the UK, France, Germany, Australia, and the USA – a true example of discovery through collaboration. 💙

5th Gift of Research: Progress 🚀
Progress in research means pushing boundaries, improving care, and finding smarter ways to do things.
Dr Matt Liew, Consultant Urologist at LUHFT, says:
"We have made a lot of progress in 2025, especially in the urology innovation space. Since starting our HoLEP service in February, we’ve completed over 30 cases, becoming a leading centre in the North West. We’ve introduced iTIND, enhanced our TURP, Urolift and Rezum offerings, and set up High Volume Low Complexity lists – completing 11 cases in a day!"
From improving efficiency with circumcision procedures to pioneering new techniques, these innovations mean better outcomes for patients.
This is just the beginning – watch this space for more in 2026! 💙

4th Gift of Research: Trust 🤝
Trust in research means ensuring participants feel confident that their safety, data and contributions truly matter.
Heather Rogers, Governance Manager at LUHFT, says:
"For us at LUHFT, the trust of our participants is a really important part of our research journey. It supports their willingness to take part and public confidence in the safety and validity of the research results."
We build trust by securing Health Research Authority approval, being transparent about how we use data and tissue samples, and engaging patients and carers in designing research. Consent is an ongoing process that strengthens relationships and shapes the future of healthcare.
A big festive thank you to everyone who has taken part this year! 💙
1st Gift of Research: Compassion ❤️
Compassion in research means listening, supporting, and explaining clearly, so families feel informed and respected.
Dr Sharp, Director of Research and Development at LWH, and the team @LiverpoolWomens show this every day. In trials like STRIDER UK, their approach built lasting trust, with participants even becoming PPI reps for future studies! 💙

2nd Gift of Research: Curiosity 🔍
Curiosity strengthens research by pushing us to ask better questions.
Jen Entwistle, Senior Research Nurse at the C&M CRDC, put this into practice by starting a Journal Club within the trust. Through regular discussion of existing studies, she and colleagues use curiosity to identify gaps and shape ideas for future research.

3rd Gift of Research: Inspiration ✨
Inspiration in research means empowering others to see what’s possible and helping them achieve it.
Prof Michelle Briggs, Director of Nursing (Research & Academic Development) at UHL Group, says:
“This is the best part of my job - helping colleagues realise and release their potential for research".
Prof Briggs has been instrumental in developing the Research Champion scheme at the UHL Group, ensuring taking part in research is possible for all staff, regardless of where you work.💙
