NOW:
BMA ARRESTS AN OFFICIAL ON CORRUPTION ALLEGATIONS AND POSSESSION OF 22 PASSPORTS
The Commissioner of the Border Management Authority (BMA), Dr Michael Masiapato, confirms the arrest of a 56-year-old BMA official stationed at the Maseru Port of Entry with Lesotho, following an intelligence-driven operation conducted by the BMA Integrity Management Unit, the Department of Home Affairs Counter Corruption Unit, the South African Police Service (SAPS) Ladybrand Detectives and K9 Unit, and Crime Intelligence Free State.
The arrest took place just over 10 days after the fifth instalment of the Anti-Corruption Awareness Campaign, hosted under the Border Management and Immigration Anti-Corruption Forum at OR Tambo International Airport. The operation was initiated after information was received from the State Security Agency regarding several Lesotho nationals' passports that had been placed under monitoring. Intelligence indicated that the passports had allegedly been transported from Limpopo to Ladybrand for the purpose of unlawfully being stamped and extending their visa validity and stay in the Republic of South Africa without the passport holders being physically present, as required by law.
Acting on this information, law enforcement authorities conducted an operation that resulted in the arrest of the BMA official. At the time of the arrest, the official was allegedly found in possession of 22 stamped passports belonging to Lesotho nationals, without the lawful holders being present, as well as R2 100 in cash.
The suspect was arrested on the spot and is expected to appear before the Ladybrand Magistrate's Court on charges relating to corruption, possession of passports without lawful authority, and immigration-related offences. The investigation remains ongoing, and additional arrests have not been ruled out.
Since the establishment of the BMA three years ago, more arrests of officials have taken place under the leadership and direction of Commissioner Masiapato.

Another elephant in the room we need to address is car insurance and medical aid: If I’ve been paying premiums for 12 months without getting into an accident or claiming any medical expenses, why can’t I get at least some of my money back at the end of the year?
NEW REGULATIONS TO STOP USE OF DRIVING LICENCES AS ID DOCUMENTS
The National Department of Transport plans to amend the National Road Traffic Regulations to prevent Traffic Register Number (TRN) certificates, learner’s licences and driving licences from being used as general identification documents.
The proposed changes follow a 2023 investigation that uncovered widespread abuse of TRNs and other road traffic documents.
Key proposed changes:
No longer accepted as general ID: TRNs, learner’s licences and driving licences will only be used for their intended road traffic-related purposes.
Stricter TRN controls: TRNs will be valid only for the period covered by the passport and permit used to obtain them.
Surrender of TRNs: Holders who obtain other acceptable identification must notify the registering authority within 21 days and surrender their TRN certificates.
Existing TRN holders: Those with certificates that do not reflect an expiry date will have three months after the regulations commence to apply for new certificates.
Institutions affected: Banks, airports, offices and residential estates will need to review their identification policies and systems.
The department says the amendments aim to prevent identity-document abuse and align road traffic legislation with the Identification Act, which places responsibility for issuing official identification documents with Home Affairs.
What happens next?
The draft amendments will be published for public comment, with submissions invited within 30 days of publication in the Government Gazette.
The final regulations will take effect on a commencement date to be announced after the comments have been considered.
In the meantime, provinces have been instructed to centralise TRN issuing at provincial help desks to strengthen controls.

[ALSO HAPPENING TODAY]
The National Prosecuting Authority is to formally withdraw charges against suspended National Police Commissioner, General Fannie Masemola in court today.
This after the NPA found that there would be no reasonable prospects of success in his prosecution.
Masemola was suspended after accusations regarding the SAPS contract awarded to Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.
This would have the way for President Cyril Ramaphosa to meet with Masemola regarding re-instatement to his job.

DEVELOPING:
The Bopha Foundation has formally requested that Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi provide evidence regarding the operational status of public surveillance cameras and patrol vehicles, an accounting of active helicopters, verification of the panic-button system’s efficacy, and the publication of associated response data.
The foundation further emphasizes that the tragic deaths of the nine women in Ekurhuleni must not be trivialized as political spectacle, nor should the incident be leveraged to reach conclusions that fall strictly under the jurisdiction of investigators and the courts.

Long queues at Home Affairs, Traffic Department, everywhere, is done so that you end up saying, let me pay someone. He says "we have democratized corruption". Even the "knowing somebody who knows somebody" in the departments, has become normalized. What happens to people who know nobody. Yho nkosi yami.
