Observations from Thursday at Birkdale

1. What a fascinating course/event. A multiple-choice exam where players can choose their own adventure. Every shot is interesting and varied. I'm obsessed.

2. This is vintage Open conditions. The stuff you see in promos and throwbacks. Sun, sand, ice cream, red faces, powdered divots, sand splashes when balls land. It weirdly feels nostalgic.

3. It's amazing how burnt out the course is and yet how well it's playing. No complaints about set-up or watering, it's firm and fast and that both rewards good shots and punishes poor ones. Especially on strike and spin. Watching guys attack tucked pins with strike, shape, spin and roll is so fun.

4. I got to tour through the players' clubhouse and can't believe the level and details the R&A go to. A spa, barber, gym, sleep rooms, ice baths, restaurants, daycare, laundry, private shop, it was wild (more soon).

5. The crowds. Early in the week but they were out early. Lots of dunes makes for a testing walk but great viewing spots. No shouts or "get in the hole" and lots of (very) polite clapping and the occasional, approving nod or headshake. Fun spot to sit atop the left grandstand on 18 and look directly over the 10th tee shot.

6. Was curious how the olds would do, having predicted they could surprise a few folk. Stenson, Molinari good examples. Went out to see Cink start his round with a pulled drive. 3-min rule meant he didn't find it and had to hit three-off-the-tee on the first tee. A relatable feeling.

7. One thing you notice at Opens is how much players and caddies study their books before each shot. Copious studying and note-taking before they even confer with each other. Multiple bunkers in play, wind checks, effective yardages, it's like watching a sniper and their spotter.

8. I know we're only 18 holes in but I'm struggling with the concept that... this is a great course and great conditions... yet the leaderboard is littered with names and games that may surprise most people. Small sample size but I wonder what that says about links golf.

9. The Birkdale clubhouse seems to be dividing opinion. I like it. Mad that it was the result of a design competition and created to look like a ship. Inside is amazing, some of the best art and historical photos I've ever seen. Also, there's something about Open venues with iconic clubhouses as the backdrop for the final hole.
